When I was a young boy I never quite understood why a movie was often referred to with the director’s name attached to it. For example, people would talk about Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand or Bawarchi or Shakti Samanta’s Aradhana. For me these were movies of Rajesh Khanna first and foremost. Yet they would invariably be attached to the director, as if he owned the movie.

Recently reader Sudhir likened my knack of discovering musical gems to going into a coal mine and stumbling upon diamonds. It is a good comparison, and I in fact feel that the likelihood of coming up with musical diamonds in the metaphorical musical coal mine is far more, seeing how many of them I discover on a regular basis. I in fact liken it to walking on a beach, and coming across these gems lying undiscovered.

“Shikaar” (1968) is not to be confused with “Shikaari” (1963) though I always confuse between the two. The confusion is further compounded by the facts that both these movies have the same singers and they have sung some fantastic songs in both these movies.

As far as I know, Sasural (1961) was a pretty big hit. Produced by Prasad Productions and directed by LV Prasad, it starred Rajendra Kumar and B Saroja Devi.

In the late 1940s/early 1950s, South Indian production houses began making films in Hindi. AVM Productions became very well-known with their runaway hit, Bahar in 1951. This was based on a superhit Tamil film and was the movie that launched Vyjanthimala in Hindi movies.

“Kaajal” (1965) was a movie starring Raj Kumar, Meena Kumari, Dharmendra, Padmini etc. When I went to a movie hall in 1970s to watch this movie, I had no inkling about this movie and its songs. But when the movie began, and its songs arrived one after the other, I and other members of the audience gasped. Wow, this song is from this movie ! oh, this song is from this movie too ! And this song also ! Unbelievable, this song too !
