Tauba ye matwaali chaal

Mukesh, known for his melancholic songs, sings a romantic song ( Shringaar ras song is an appropriate hindi word) for Manoj Kumar praising the beauty and walk of Mumtaz and Waheeda Rahman. Unlike how a typical Indian lady would react on such an approach, Mumtaz and Waheeda respond with an almost unreal sportingness.

I have heard this song many a times, without knowing which movie it is from and how it was picturised. I assumed that this song was sung by a housewife whose husband was sulking.
When I finally watched the picturisation, I felt let down. It was not a housewife singing it for her husband, it was a mujra sung by a courtesan for her client. This was one standard form of item songs in those days. Other form of item song being cabaret, typically performed by Helen.

This song, one of the many songs that talk of eternity by using the word “sau saal”, “sau baar” etc has become immortal. The lyrics, the music, the singing, everything is so picture perfect that this song is an evergreen song, liked by people of all generations.
As far as this blog is concerned, the word “sau” or hundred has another significance. It is the 100th song of this blog. Yes, with this song, this blog completes its first century of evergreen Bollywood songs.

The dashing Joy Mukherji, a Shammi Kapoor clone ( I do not call him poor man’s Shammi Kapoor, that title is reserved for Vishwajeet) sings a piano song in his home production “Humsaaya”. The movie itself was a failure, but this song survived and was the saving grace for this disaster of a movie.

Rajesh Khanna was just beginning his bull run as a superstar in late 1960s. Safar was one of the earlier movies of that time. That era coincided with an even bigger bull run begun by Kishore Kumar as a singer and R D Burman as music director. But the shape of things to come could not have been predicted from this movie. Here Mukesh sings for Feroz Khan ( yes, this Rajesh Khanna movie had Feroz Khan too ) and Kalyanji Anandji scores the music. One year later, it would all be about Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar and R D Burman in a Rajesh Khanna movie.

This fantastic song that has become a memorable song indelibly etched on the psyches of music lovers across the generations was a magical song when it was released in 1961. This song, picturised on Dev Anand and Sadhna has remained popular ever since. Few people have much idea about the movie ( Hum dono) or about the music director (Jaidev), but the song is one which was never forgotten, so there is no question of this song being not known to any bollywood music listener.

Guide had some awesome songs. Not only did they become very popular among public, even creators of bollywood music ( singers, lyricists, music directors) voted Guide as the biggest musical blockbuster bollywood movie, with as many as 3 songs of this movie being adjusted among the top 20 songs of all time. ( Source – Outlook magazine january 2006 issue)
This particular song from Guide is a very difficult song to sing, but Lata had sung it outstandingly. As I have mentioned quite a few times in this blog, Lata was at the peak of her singing prowess in 1960s, and this song is yet another example of that assertion.

The tune is typically O P Nayyar, and the storyline is tailormade for Shammi Kapoor. But Shammi Kapoor was not available to act in all the movies. Movie makers those days had Shammi Kapoor clones to choose from. One was the tall and dashing Joy Mukherjee, and the other was the pint sized Vishwajeet.

Public have their own rankings for songs, but what about the elite, those who create such songs ? How do they rank songs and which are the songs that they rate the best ? A couple of years ago, an Indian magazine ( Outlook ) had taken a poll of people associated with Bollywood music industry ( singers, music directors, lyricists ) to find out their favourite songs.
