Chaman ke phool bhi
Posted on: January 25, 2009
In Bollywood movies, only hero and heroine seem to have tender feelings seeing that only they get to sing romantic songs. Villains on the other hand seem to have hearts made of granite and they do not have any tender feelings of love etc.

This is the kind of song that I fondly call a “chayageet song” which by its nature is a romantic song if you are in the right mood, or a sleep inducing song if you are not, since such songs are sung at night time. 😉

Tumko piya dil diya kitne naaz se

While posting songs in this blog, I have noticed that it is either the audio or the video, which is often better than the other. But there are some songs in which both audio and the picturisation are outstanding.

While researching Shammi Kapoor’s songs, I was interested to find out who, apart from Rafi, had given playback singing for Shammi Kapoor. I came across a few songs sung by Manna Dey and Mukesh. May be I may find songs sung by a few more male playback singers.

“Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen” had some fabulous semi classical songs. One such song, sung by Rafi was “Naache man mora magan”. When I listened to this song, I was awestruck, and I thought that this has to be the best song in this movie.

This is a song from “Gumrah”, a 1963 movie showing Mala Sinha at her sacrificing best. In this movie, the kids of her sister ask her to tell a story, and she sings this song “ek thi ladki” (happy version) which she claims to be the story of one of her friends, but as the audience guess correctly, is her own story. This serves as a lullaby and the kids go to sleep peacefully.

Filmfare best male singer awards began in 1960. Mukesh was the first winner for Anari, and then Rafi won it for the next two years for “Chaudhvin ka chaand” and “Sasuraal”. Then there was no award for 1963. The 1964 award was won by a new voice, viz Mahendra Kapoor for Gumrah (1963). The song which earned him this coveted prize was this song “chalo ik baar phir se ajnabi ban jaayen hum dono”.

Sau baar janam lenge

There are many songs picturised on a man with a female voice singing in the background, viz “Gumnaam”, “Bees saal baad” etc. In this song, it is just the reverse. Here it is a female who is seen walking near a waterfall and the male voice singing in the background. This song “sau baar janam lenge” is in the same league as “Gumnaam” song “Gumnaam hai koyi”. It is just as haunting and creates similar kind of atmosphere.

Husn chala kuchh aisi chaal

Raja of Jhumri Tilayya, oops, Holland, keeps wondering why I did not post this song, and whether I did not like this song. Rest assured , Raja, I like all songs of Shammi Kapoor, or for that matter, songs picturised on any other actors, and there is no way I would not have liked this song.

There is little doubt that this movie “Phir Wohi Dil Laaya hoon” is known mainly for its music. I have already posted a song from this movie. But this was a musical extravaganza so I cannot help but post more songs from this movie. O P Nayyar, who ruled the roost in 1950s as a music director proved with this movie that he was capable of churning out good music in 1960s too.
