Missing Films of 1960s – 116
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah, wonderful. Revisiting an old friend after a very long gap. Feels good.

This series was initiated on 30th Sep, 2015, almost 5 years ago to the day. The series continued with a certain regularity almost for four years, till 1st July, 2019. That day, I had posted a rarest of the rare finds – “Taaron Bhari Raat Hai” – a song from the film ‘Hawa Mahal’ (1962), a film which is very much available in video, but sadly all its songs have been axed from the VCD release. I had written in that post, that I had even gone beyond the VCD version and searched out the VHS cassette of the film, and even that had no songs. But fortunately, searching thru film, I accidentally chanced to catch half a song that appeared at the end of the film. Probably, when the editors were making the cuts, for whatever reasons (which we do not know at this point), they had missed out the closing shots of the film, whereat one song is repeated partially as is the tradition followed in many Hindi films we know.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 71
———————————————————————————–

This date ten years ago (viz 5 september 2010) saw business as usual in the blog. Six songs from six movies were discussed chronologically in the order in which these movies were released.
Here are the details:-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Mat bolo bahaar ki batiyaan re Prem Nagar-1940 11 songs covered out of 13
Udan khatole pe ud jaaun Anmol Ghadi-1946 All songs covered
Aadmi gareeb ho ya ameer ho … sambhaalo dil zaraa Dil Bhi Tera Ham Bhi Tere-1960 All songs covered
Begaani shaadi mein Abdullah deewaanaa Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai-1960 All songs covered
Ho more gore badan pe gulaabi nazariyaa na daal Sikandar E Azam-1965 03 songs posted
Sansaar ki har shai ka itna hi fasaanaa hai Dhundh-1973 All songs covered

One can see that “Prem Nagar”(1940) and “Sikandar e Azam”(1965) are the only two movies from that day which still have a few songs left to be covered. “Prem Nagar”(1940) balance songs are not available, so that leaves us with “Sikandar e Azam”(1965) as the only movie eligible for the “Blg Ten Year Challenge” today ten years later on 5 september 2020.

Today (11 August 2020) happens to be Janmashtmi, the day Lord Krishna, the avatar of Lord Vishnu was born in the Dwapar Yug. His earlier avatar was in the Treata Yug and that was as Lord Ram, and the birthday of Lord Ram is called Ramnavami.

Lord Ram was a serious, sombre, idealism personifieed avatar of Lord Vishnu whereas Lord Krishna was a playful, more human like avatar. Playful and non serious he may be, but he meant business when the situation so demanded. And do not fiorget, it is Lord Vishnu, who gave us Bhagwatgeeta ka gyaan.

It should come as no surprise to note that Lord Krishna has been a favourite God of Hindi movies and there have been a good number of Lord Krishn related songs in Hindi movies.

“Kaajal”(1965) was a movie that I knew little about when I was growing up. I watched this movie in 1978 when my went to college and my movie watching spree began with a vengeance. Those days, I only liked “new” movies and songs and scoffed at “old” movies and songs. But I had heard about old movies, so I would go and watch them when no “new” movie was there for me to watch. The old movies tended to run to empty house and so buying tickets for these movies was not a problem. I wondered if a day will come in future when one would be able to watch “new” movies with the same ease, without needing to queue up and black marketeers having a field day. Believe it or not, today we are actually in that situation where one can buy tickets of even brand new movies without needing to form a queue in the movie hall.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 34
—————————————————————————

The rate of posting of songs in the blog ten years ago was quite similar to the present day rate of posting, even though things were obviously much different in 2010 than what they are now. This day ten years ago (6 june 2010) was a Sunday, when the final of French open tennis tournament was played and Rafael Nadal won his fifth French open title defeating Robin Söderling of Sweden in straight sets. Now a days, no sporting events are taking place.

I find it interesting to note that the world was suffering from the pandemic of Swine Flu between January 2009 till August 2010. But India was not affected as badly as we are today affected with Corona Virus. There was no lockdown of any kind those days, though night running of trains was suspended in Naxalite affected Orissa-Jharkhand-West Bengal region (SE Rly) those days after Maoist insurgents caused derailment of Jnaneshwari express on 28 may 2010. 148 passengers had died in this ghastly accident near Jhargram.

As a school going student, I was kept in strict discipline which meant going from home to school and back. No watching of movies. Even talking about movies and reading movie magazines were taboo. That did not prevent me from clandestinely reading movie magazines and books lying around the home that was apparently alright for elders to read.

It was in 1978, when I went to college and was allowed freedom as befitting a college goer. And I misused this freedom with abandon. I started watching movies left and right bunking college, as if making up for the lost time.

It was during this movie watching spree that I watched many old movies during their re runs. It included not only movies like “Sholay”(1975),”Deewaar”(1975), “Mera Gaaon Merra Desh”(1971) etc etc but also movies from earlier decades.

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 10
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah, a post waiting for some time now to come on board. This post and this song is specially for dear Avinash ji. 🙂 🙂

As you listen to the song, and the words settle down in the mind, you can almost imagine – Avinash ji, on his flight back from Kenya to India, thinking about this song. And then the landing at Mumbai, then passing thru the immigration and baggage collect. He bumps into an old friend while waiting for the bags. The friend asks him where from he is returning. Avinash ji says, Kenya. The friend says – अरे यार, वो भी कोई जगह है देखने की, see, I am returning from Barcelona, now that is a place to visit. And instantly Avinash ji breaks into this song, telling his friend “Tum Ne Dekha Kya Bhala, Gar Na Dekha Aafrika”. And there is a loud applause from the crowd waiting for their baggage.

Greetings all for the celebration today – the anniversary of declaration of our nation as a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic.

The Constituent Assembly, consisting of 389 eminent people from across all walks of life and all population segments in the country, was established on 6th December, 1946. After a string of debates, which included public debates in different parts of the country, the Assembly agreed to adopt our constitution on 6th November, 1949. And then on 26th January of 1950, the nation of India, that is Bharat, was declared as being governed according to this document which is the supreme law of our land.
