I have posted one song from “Gambler”(1970) in the past. Somhow I keep confusing among the songs of “Gambler”, “Guide”, “Prem Pujari” etc. All these movies had Dev Anand and Waheeda Rahman in them, if I am not mistaken, and all these movies had music by S D Burman.

“Johny Mera Naam” (1970) was perhaps the last time a Dev Anand movie turned out to be very successful at box office, though “Des Pardes” (1978) was also successful.

I was aware of a movie called “Bhai bhai” released in 1940s, but I never knew that a movie of the same name was made in 1970 too. This 1970 movie must have done really poorly at the box office to be so unknown.

One reason why many old songs ( 1970s and earlier) are popular is of course to do with nice music in these songs. Moreover, the music directors ( there were many outstanding music directors at that time) recognised the value of lyrics. And they would wait for lyricists to write their songs.

Manoj Kumar was a movie maker who would make movies with simplistic messages telling India was good, west was bad ( Purab aur paschim), Villagers were good, city folks were bad ( Upkaar ) etc. In this connection, here is this movie “Yaadgaar” (1970) where Manoj Kumar continues to shove his ideals down the throats of public.

Hrishikesh Mukherji watched a Japanese movie in a film festival and he was so influenced by that movie that he made it into a Bollywood movie called “Anand”(1970) which won critical acclaim and was liked by moviegoers as well. In fact, Hrishikesh Mukherji was so enamoured by this theme that he himself remade his own remake into “Mili”.
