Very little is known about music director Ram Laxman. Initially there were two of them, viz Ram Kadam and Vijay Patil who composed music as Ram Laxman. Ram Kadam died in 1976. But Vijay Patil continued to compose music as Ram Laxman. In fact, most well known movies with music by Ram Laxman came after 1976 when it was Vijay Patil alone composing music as Ram Laxman. Movies like “Maine Pyaar Kiya” (1989) and “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”(1994) are the compositions of Ram Laxman.

Ever since ‘Alam Ara’ (1931), the first Indian sound film was released in 1931, songs have become an integral part of our films. The Hindi films produced during the 30s and 40s used to have on anaverage 10-12 songs per film. Naturally, there was a demand for song writers(lyricists). So the producers of the films lured some well known Urdu/Hindi poets of that time to write lyrics of the songs for their films. Since the films were made in Hindustani (a name given by the film fraternity for a language which is a mix of Hindi and some common Urdu words)and some of the producers/directors and music directors were not well versed in this language, the lyricists also acted as guides to them. Some of the well known lyricists of 30s and 40s were, Arzoo Lucknowi, Safdar Aah Sitapuri, Kidar Sharma, Aziz Kashmiri, Behzad Lucknowi, Pandit Indra, Pandit Narendra Sharma, Zia Sarhadi, D N Madhok, P L Santoshi etc. Some of them also wrote scripts/ dialogues for the films.

If one asks old Hindi film song buffs about the song “ek chameli ke mandwe tale from ‘Cha Cha Cha’ (1964), almost all of them would say that the song was sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Most of them would even know the name of the film and that the song was composed by Iqbal Qureshi. Those who have watched the movie or video clip of this song, all of them would remember that the song was picturised on a modest looking Helen and Chandrashekhar. But very few would know as to who wrote the song.

“Masoom” (1982) was inspired from “Man, Woman and Child written” by Erich Segal. And it must be said that the tale was very well adapted by Gulzar who wrote the screenplay and directed with great sensitivity and understanding by Shekhar Kapoor. There were few people in the audience who remained unmoved by the plight of eight year old Rahul (played by Jugal Hansraj), a result of one night affair between an unwed Bhawna (played by Supriya Pathak) and a happily married DK (Naseeruddin Shah) at Nainital at a time when DK’s wife Indu (Shabana Azmi) is expecting their first child. DK goes back home and has a happy family life with two daughters Pinky (Urmila Matondkar) and Minni (Aradhana).

Today (19 august) is the death anniversary of Utpal Dutt (29 march 1929- 19 august 1993). In Hindi movie he typically played a comedian or character actor and I do not think he may have ever got any song to lip sync. So any songs that I want to discuss will necessarily will have to be a song where Utpal Dutt is present, without doing any lip syncing.

‘Jeewan Dhaara’ was a social family film. I remembered about this song when Peevesie posted those two songs of “Golmaal”. I had forgotten the name and song lyrics and tune. I remembered that Kishore Kumar was the singer and most probably it was by Laxmikant Pyarelal, and that it was a funny song performed on stage by Amol Palekar. I vaguely remembered something like ‘gangaram’ and ‘totaram’ in the lyrics. So what did i do. I googled it. And presto ! i had the words “gangaram kanwara reh gayaa”. Then it was just a matter of finding a video link in Youtube, which was easy.

When I was growing up in 1970s then I had propounded a theory about the actors and movie makers of Hindi movies. My thoery was that the movie makers needed to take the movie going janta for a ride by serving them fare that they liked. In cruder terms, movie going public had to be fooled into partonising their movies. And the movie makers needed to be on their toes because it was obviously not possible to keep serving them the same fare.
