We have had two posts today celebrating the birth anniversary of the one and only Mohd. Rafi. And both were excellent posts. Our Avinashji has managed to remember Mahipal’s birth anniversary too. Great job!

If it is a post by me then it has to be someone’s’ birthday.
It is 8thSeptember. Our beloved Asha Bhonsle’s 84thbirthday. So let me wish her a very Happy Birthday with this very lively number from her Non- Film album ‘Janam Samjha Karo’ (1997). I just thought that it will be a lovely departure from routine to showcase the versatility of the forever young-at-heart Asha.

People talk about the rich voice quality that Amitabh Bachchan has – the baritone etc. But has it occurred to anyone that there are and were and will be other actors who have or had similar voice? One such voice was that of Mogambo. There are tales that tell how the makers of “Mr. India” went from Danny to Amjad Khan to any other known faces of that era to play the character of Mogambo. Each one had his own reason for not taking up that character and eventually Amrish Puri ended up being The Mogambo and now it is impossible to even imagine any other person as Mogambo. I am unable to distinguish the man from the character and part of the power in the role was the voice of the actor.

There have been Hindi movies on the theme of actual wars fought by Indian Defence forces post independence, with semi fictional narratives woven around those wars. The first one that left lasting impact was Chetan Anand’s “ Haqeeqat”, based on 1962 Indo- China war.
In this movie theere was a very touching Mohammad Rafi song Main ye soch kar uske dar se uthaa thaa that brought out the trauma of soldiers living far away from their beloved.

Good day to all in atuldom
So today’s post is not giving any classic vintage rare song. It is one of the run of the mill (chalu, chalta hai) kind of song. It is written by Sameer who has written many traditionally lyrical and poetic songs. But I consider it must have been a little difficult for such a person to write “a not so purist” kind of song. People would consider it the depths of despair to even think of it as a song. But in the words of my daughter it is a very realistic song. A normal middle class person can only promise a Pepsi or coke to his girlfriend. He can only find solitude in a crowded theatre. Lets agree that in the 1960s,70,80s etc that is where we used to encounter most couples who were in love. So what is wrong in expressing it explicitly in a song. To top it where is solitude in our cities now a days?

18th September 2015 is the birthday of Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter Shabana Azmi. She turns 66 on this day.
There are many children who are known as so-and-so’s child and there are many children who make a place for themselves in public eye and then the parents are called so-and-so’s parents. That means Shabana Azmi’s Pehchaan need not be as Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter. She is a persona by herself. Being the poet’s daughter or the veteran stage actress’s daughter only explains her artistic leanings.

Genius of Jaidev – 20
================
Radio Ceylon gave me a jolt early today morning, to remind me of Jaidev ji’s ‘Punya-Tithi’. How could I, a diehard fan of Jaidev ji’s (rather an air conditioner) fail to present his song on our Blog, on this day, in my series ‘Genius of Jaidev? I have many of his songs partially ready for posting, so I selected this one and hurriedly gave finishing touches for presentation.

Today’s song is from Border (1997) the war film based on the ’71 Indo-Pak war. It was by J.P.Dutta who up until then had made a few Rajasthan based stories— Ghulami, Yateem, Hathyar, Batwara, Kshatriya etc. Them he made 3 movies based on the life of those who live in the Indo Pak border —Border, Refugee & LOC Kargil. This shows his general fascination for the desert and some love for the Indo Pak relation. His movies have always had songs which decry the border drawn between the 2 countries.

Genius of Jaidev
===========
In 1973 a producer named Ramesh Khosla was making a film, but the production was shelved due to his death. Jaidev had recorded few songs of Lata and Mukesh for that film. After a long long time, Robin Khosla, son of Ramesh, wrote a story line on Kashmir issue for a film called ‘Chand Grahan’, and accommodated those unreleased songs in the film. We do not know whether the film on that sensitive subject was ever made, passed censors and even released, but in 1997 the audio of this movie songs were finally released. It was 24 years after the demise of Mukesh and 10 years after the death of Jaidev, that these melodious songs saw the light of the day. Two of the Mukesh songs are already covered on this Blog. The presentation today, is one of the two Lata songs, from that film. Arun ji may shed some light on the star cast and some trivia about the film.
