Today 7th August’2024 is the seventieth birth anniversary of singer Suresh Wadkar. He was born on 7th August’1954 in Kolhapur (Maharashtra). On this occasion here is a song from the movie ‘Paheli-1977’. Today’s song is from the film Bhakta Dhruv-1947.
This was the first Talkie film on Bhakta Dhruv. The next came in 1957 and the third with the same title was in 1983. In between, another title called Bhakta Dhruv Kumar came in 1964. Going through the Film Title index, one finds that a total of 30 films with titles “Bhakta….” were made from 1934 to 1983. These were mostly different Bhakts like Kabir, Gopal Bhaiyya, Pooran, Soordas, Ramdas etc. Six films were made on Bhakta Prahlad.

Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.
I remember there was another film of the same title made in 1937, starring the stunt Hero Navinchandra Joshi and Gohar Karnataki – sister of actress/singer Amirbai Karnataki. The other name of that film was ‘Shareef Badmash’. I was wondering as to what was the real meaning of ” Guru Ghantal”. When I tried to find out, I learnt that Guru Ghantal means a Cheater, a very cunning or extra clever person, who is not what he claims to be !

The place where we stay in Vadodara is near a ‘party plot’ where celebrations, mainly marriage functions take place quite often. Naturally marriage processions too accompany these marriage functions in the road adjacent to the housing society. The sound of the music and singing by the band party create a huge din. The sound of the DJ is so much that it causes vibrations in our third floor flat. There is also one ‘regular’ band party that has a male singer who also sings in a ‘female voice’. Normally they play old songs from the years of 1970s -1980s. This band party is almost a fixture for marriage functions that take place in this locality.

It has Mahendra Sandhu, Danny Denzongpa, Vijayendra Ghatge, Ranjeet, Neeta Mehta, Deepika, Master Ravi, Viju Khote, Rajan Haksar, Kamaldeep, Kirti Kumar, Uttam Sodhi, Ashok Narayan, Manohar, Randhawa, Sudhir, Jayshree T., Darshan, A Mishra, Devendra Marshall, Mahendra, Mirza, Tilak Raj and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 30.05.1983.

“Ginny Aur Johny-1976” was directed by Mehmood for ‘Balaji Arts, Bombay’. It was produced by Amarlal P Chhabria. The cast of this movie has Ginny (debutant, Mehmood’s real life daughter), Mehmood, Helen, Bhushan Tiwari, Preeti Ganguly, Naushir Khatau and others. There were several actors who appeared in friendly appearance in this movie. I was on the look out for a song sung by Kishore Kumar before 1970 that is not yet covered in the blog. I came across this lesser heard song, which I think could have been a well-known song. Maybe this movie was not as much successful and its songs were forgotten easily.

Hullo Atuldom
Today is 4th August. We are celebrating/ remembering the maverick actor, singer, music director, producer, director of Hindi Films on his 95th birthday. I think he was first a singer who was coaxed into acting and eventually turned a producer/director of films. I think he composed songs only for films that he made. (I don’t mind if fans of his correct me 🙂 )
I am sure I need not spell specifically that I am talking of Kishore Kumar (Khandlawala).
Also, I need not mention that he was the brother of Ashok Kumar & Anup Kumar & Sati Devi who was the wife of Sashadhar Mukherjee (founder of Filmalaya Studios). It is common knowledge that all his four wives were actresses & his son Amit Kumar is also a singer/actor/ music composer.
