In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were some Hindi films which were labelled as ‘parallel cinema’, ‘new wave cinema’ or ‘art cinema’ when they were released. The films included ‘Bhuvan Shome’ (1969) by Mrinal Sen, ‘Uski Roti’ (1969) by Mani Kaul, ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969) by Basu Chatterjee, ‘Maya Darpan’ (1972) by Kumar Sahni, ‘Garam Hawa’ (1974) by M S Sathyu and ‘Ankur’ (1974) by Shyam Benegal. Among these films, there was a film titled ’27 Down’ (1973) about which I had a faint memory. Few days back, the name of this film came back to my mind when I read an article with a curiosity-creating caption, ‘A class IV employee, his only film won two National Awards, died at 35……. Who was Awtar Kaul?’ in The Economic Times, September 22, 2025. He was none other than the director of ’27 Down’ (1973).
Subsequently, I read two more articles about Awtar Kaul – one in ‘Chinar Shade’ by Avtar Mota and another in ‘The Wire’ by his nephew, Vinod Kaul. Surprisingly all these articles appeared during 2024-25.
Incidentally, ’27 Down’ (1974) was screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa in 2024 to commemorate 50 years of the film’s release. Perhaps these articles appeared around that time as tributes to Awtar Kaul on 50th year of his passing away on July 20, 1974.

Mukesh and his NFS – 10
Chaand si chamkti raaton mein,
Aaya na koi wada kar ke
I present yet another NFS whose composer is not known.
The first three words of the song will surely take back readers to the well-known song from Sautan ki Beti (1989). But that is where the similarity ends for today’s song seems to be from early fifties and by an entirely different lyricist, the well-known Anjum Jaipuri.

Today’s song is from the film Naag Panchami-1953.
The 5th Tithi or the 5th day of Saawan (Shrawan) is celebrated as NAAG PANCHAMI. On this day, Naag/Cobras or simply any snake in general is worshipped. This is because Snakes are considered as Farmer’s friends. Snakes eat mice, which destroy stored grains and standing crops too. Mice also spread many diseases in villages.
Worshipping Snakes is a symbolic way to acknowledge their importance to the Farmers and spread the message of environmental balance. On this day, young girls in the villages tie Jhoola(swing) on trees and sing songs.

Hullo Atuldom
A few days back we got the news of the passing away of veteran actress Sandhya, said to be 93 or 94. Some sources give her birth year as 1938 & place of birth as Kochi? Kochi? I saw this video which was posted as tribute to the departed soul. This video as also some news channels give her birth year as 1930 & place of birth as Gujarat. I recall that there is a post by our in-house encyclopaedia that will give us all the details that we need to know. Details like her birth name was Vijaya Deshmukh, actress Vatsala Deshmukh was her sister, & another actress of Marathi films, the (late) Ranjana Deshmukh was her niece.

Mukesh and his NFS – 09
In the aftermath of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the team of composers Hunslal-Bhagatram, lyricist Rajendra Krishna and singer Mohd. Rafi created a marathon NFS overnight. The song was over 12 minutes long and was made into 4 parts probably to fit on the 78-rpm record disc. The song was an instant hit all over the country.
On the blog, this song was represented way back in 2012 and here is the link.
During the same period, Mukesh also recorded a song on the situation and circumstances.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————
In this post I am presenting a song from the 1966 Bhojpuri movie ‘Loha Singh (Bhojpuri)’.
Regulars on the blog would wonder on my new found love for Bhojpuri songs. Yes, I am enjoying listening to the songs of yesteryear Bhojpuri films that were made from sixties to eighties. ( I like a song from the recent years too, but we will have to wait for that 🙂 ).
Geet Kosh Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions that the movie ‘Loha Singh-1966’ was directed by Kundan Kumar for Vikramsheel Arts. The cast of this movie had Sujit Kumar, Vijaya Chaudhary, R.S. Kashyap, Sujata, Tiwari, Sheel Kumar, Helen and others.
