What to write about the voice for which no information is apparently traceable.  Many artists of the 1930s have become obscure.  The Indian cinema industry is notorious for ignoring its own history and roots.  There have been no industry supported or sponsored programs or efforts aimed as compiling and collating the history of its own.

Akbar Khan Durrani Peshawari – a voice that appears to be a trained classical singer, has no traceable information available, other than of course the listings in the Geet Kosh, that identify maybe about 5 songs sung by him. Searching on the YouTube, one can locate maybe about four or five of his songs, all of which are not identified in the Geet Kosh.  There are two songs from the film ‘Sultaana’ (1934), which are available in his voice.  Both are wonderful gems – “Kitaab e Dard mein Likha Mere Gham Ka Fasaana Hai” and “Mushkil Kushaa Hai Naam Tera”.  On the blog, we have one more song in his voice already posted; the film is ‘Postman’ (1938) and the song “Hauslaa Aashiq Ko Chaahiye Dil Ko Lagaane Ke Liye“.

The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 2

Almost eighty years ago – ‘Miss Frontier Mail’ from way back in 1936. The caricatures in the video clip stand testimony to the pioneers of Hindi cinema. This is the famous original stunt film from the house of Wadia Movietone, featuring the famous fearless Nadia, the queen of stunt films in the 30s and 40s.

“Prem Ki Aag”(1936) was directed by M L Kapur for Mukhtaar Film Company, Bombay. The movie had Mukhtaar Begam, Haseena Banu, Bhai Desa, Pran Shankar Acharya, F M Butt, D N Uppal, A R Akhtar, Safdar Ali etc in it.

“Piya Ki Jogan”(1936) , also known as “Puchased Bride” was directed by Hiren Bose for Golden Eagle Movietone, Sindh. The movie had Sardar Akhtar, Pramod Chandra, Krishna Kumari, Merwan Irani, D Manik, Ashalat, Vasu H K, Sheila, Agha Jaan, Bannerji, Niranjan Singh, Meharbaan, Anil Biswas etc in it.

“Pahaadi Kanya”(1936) was directed by Harshad Rai Mehta for Wadia Movietone, Bombay. This movie had Nadia, Boman Shroff, John Cawas, Sharifa, Gulshan, Sardar Mansoor, Master Mohammad, Jal Khambata, Abdul Rehman, Bismillah etc in it. This movie is described as a costume drama in HFGK though it appears to be an action movie, seeing the name of Nadia in it in the title role alongwith Boman Shroff and Johan Cawas.

While searching for songs of “Village Girl”(1945), I came across a movie of the same title which was produced in 1936. “Village Girl”(1936) had Sabita Devi and Surendra in lead roles.
