Lovely greetings for a wonderful Eid celebration today, to one and all.
Today, we celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzaan. Today is the first day of the month of Shawwaal, the tenth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. Ramzaan, which is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset. Fasting during Ramzaan, helps in developing self-control and is a way of getting closer to Allaah. It is historic record that the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in the last ten days of the month of Ramzaan. Today’s festivities mark the end of the fasting period.

Anil Biswas, a name that is associated with the Hindi film music, almost from its inception in the early 30s – an association that lasted all the way into the decade of 60s. It is almost as if the golden age of film music came to an end when this hugely talented composer decided to call it a day, and retired from film music in the late 60s. In the 30s and 40s, female actor-singers like Noor Jehan, Khursheed, Rajkumari, Amirbai Karnataki and Zoharabai Ambalewali dominated the Hindi film industry. These artists were based in Lahore and Bombay (Mumbai). Kanandevi who was based in Calcutta(Kolkatta) held somewhat higher status of a superstar actor-singer for nearly two decades both in Bengali and Hindi film industries. Today, April 22nd is the birth anniversary of Kanandevi who was born in Howrah to a poor family. Her adoptive father died early which forced her to take the responsibility of looking after her family at a young age of 10 years. A well wisher introduced her to Jyoti Studios where she was given a small role in a Bengali silent film Joydeb(1926). Thereafter she worked in some more silent films. It took about 10 years for her to be noticed as an accomplished actor in the film Khooni Kaun (1936).

Growing up in India, one of the memorable numbers that I heard in my childhood on the two sides of a 78 rpm gramophone record from my late father’s collection was “Bhaarat ki ek sannari ki hum katha sunaate hain” in Vijay Bhatt’s seminal Ram Rajya (1943).

It is a bit of a surprise for me that one of the songs which I had heard from my mother in my childhood was intact in my memory even though I had no occasion to listen to on the radio or watch on the TV thereafter. This is more so when I was engulfed on those days by the popular songs of the early 50s. As I came to know much later, this song was the most popular one attaining the tag of the highest sales of gramophone records for HMV in 1943. The song was ‘beena madhur madhur kachhu bol’ from the film RAM RAJYA (1943). I was not aware of details of the song until I watched the video clip of the song for first time on YT few months back. Before that, I was under the impression that it was a non-filmy classical song.
