It was one of the most popular songs of 1971 as far as I was concerned. And I guess one can say that for many other songs, that is how good the songs of 1971 were.

This song could be heard frequently on radio and loudspeakers those days. I knew that the movie was from Rajesh Khanna starrer “Dushman”, but that is all I knew. It is only recently that I have watched the video clip of this song and then I came to know that Rajesh Khanna goes to a kotha, gets drunk and sings this song.

Here is a Mukesh song from a 1971 movie called Upaasna. This song has Mukesh singing for Feroz Khan. The situation is that Feroz Khan has nursed Mumtaz back to health but he laments the fact that Mumtaz, earlier confined to wheel chair and now back on her feet, failed to notice Feroz Khan’s true feelings for her.

How does a male express his feelings to a lady of his dreams. The modern method is just to say “I love you” and be done with it. But that was not the way in Bollywood movies those days. Well, in bollywood movies those days, beating about the bush was often the way to convey one’s feelings to the lady of one’s dreams. Directly saying “I love you” was considered too crude and unsophisticated in those days. 300 words and 4 minutes were used to say what could have been said in 3 words and 3 seconds.

This movie Adhikaar (1971) may have been forgotten, but this movie had some very nice songs in it. I had already posted one song “Rekha O Rekha” from this movie. Here is another song, a qawwali from this movie, this time.

And what a qawwali ! R D Burman proves that he was not just a composer of foot tapping western tunes, he could create nice qawwalis as well. And this qawwali is just as foot tapping as any other R D Burman compositions. This must rank as one of the best qawwalis in Bollywood movies, that is for sure.

Some day I will make a list of all the sad songs of Mukesh, and then I will analyse them to find out which song expresses which kind of sadness. I may be able to identify scores of types of sadnesses listening to Mukesh’s songs, and then I will present my thesis to an university and take a doctorate. Not a bad idea, I think.

Old songs were not always serious songs or classical songs. There used to be light hearted timepass songs as well, which were not expected to become evergreen songs even by their composers. Popular impression among fans is that Kishore Kumar sang happy songs, Mukesh sang sad songs etc. In reality, every leading singer sang songs of different moods.

Take Rafi for example. He has sung songs covering the entire gamut of human emotions- right from devotional songs to tapori songs. And he would do justice to every song, however insignificant the music director, or the movie, or the actors may be.
