Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990)
Today 27th June’2024 is the birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman. On this occasion we are paying our tributes to him by posting some of the songs composed by him.
For the last few years I have been regularly listening to songs composed by R.D. Burman on radio or on playlist recorded in a pen-drive. It is always a pleasure to listen to the songs composed by Pancham as many RD Burman songs composed by him are my favourites. Listening to his well known songs as well as songs that I was not aware of is a new experience now. I during my growing up years may not have been able to discern the nuances of his music, including music created through unconventional ‘instruments’.

Anand Bakshi (21st July 1930-30th March 2002) whose birthname was Bakshi Anand Prakash Vaid, was a poet, first and foremost. Writing poetry was his hobby from a young age. He used to write occasionally, even after he joined the navy. He used his songs & lyrics in local programmes related to his troop. He worked for many years in the navy and simultaneously tried to market his songs in the Mumbai film world.

Two Indian actors were born in 1938 one in Calcutta and another in Surat. Both had their first movies around 1960/61. But their first film together happened sometime in 1977/78. “Mukti” (1977) was perhaps the first time they acted together. I am speaking of Shashi Kapoor (18th March 1938) & Sanjeev Kumar (9th July 1938), post which they were seen in 9/10 movies, the last of which released in 1989. I discovered this movie just before I began writing this post. The print that is available online is not very good but it gives a fair idea of the film.

Hullo to all friends
I know it is rather late in the day to wish a ‘Happy Friendship Day’; but as the saying goes ‘Better Late Than Never’.
This morning my husband had a confused look on his face when he started receiving Friendship Day messages. He asked me “when is this day?”. The reason behind the question was – he had received friendship day messages last weekend too, on July 30th to be exact.

Introducing “Tridev” (1989) on the blog with a song that was lost in the shadow of a more popular song of this movie. Both the songs have similar sounds at the beginning but the tune, the setting, words all are different. In fact “Tridev” had three songs that started with “oye oye”. Then the popular song went on as “Tirchhi topiwaale” and it had a version which was slower in tempo and can be labelled ‘sad version’. The song with this post went on as “gajar ne kiya hai ishaara” which was the song just before the climax. It had the three heroines doing a “jab tak hai jaan, jaane jahaan” kind of dance.
