How do you judge a song? Especially when you are comparing songs of different genres. Is “My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves” a better or worse song than “John Jaani Janardan” is an answer one can at least attempt.

But what about “Honthon Mein Aisi Baat” and “Rula Ke Gaya Sapna Mera“? Can you truly answer which is the better song? The genres, the feelings they are trying to evoke are so different. Its not a fair comparison too.  One can say – oh this song has an alaap thats nice. But if an alaap is misplaced in the other song then its not a fair comparison, no?

Now you will ask me why compare songs at all. Well normally I just decide if I like a song or not. But today started a fun activity on Twitter with @mrnarci running a bracket style tournament polls to find the best song from 2000s. They had earlier conducted a similar one to find the best Rehman song and it was the best kind of chaos. Just in case one wants to know, “Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan” emerged as the winner.

So for the 2000s bracket, since songs of different styles are in the same poll I have come up with my own criteria.

(A) – I judge the song on its potential. If its a disco song, does it make you want to dance. If its a love song then does it evoke the joy of love.

(B) – Is the song fitting the situation in the movie. Or does it feel too generic

(C) – Does it stand out in its genre or is it middling.

So today when I had to compare the four songs “Naam Ada Likhna” (‘Yahaan’, ), “Ande Ka Funda” (‘Jodi No. 1’, 2001), “Kaise Mujhe” (Ghajini) and “Awaara Mann Mein”. I absolutely had to choose “Ande Ka Funda”. The song has the absolute joy of Govinda songs. It is a good party song, and it’s instantly bringing the memories of the song and makes me laugh and smile. “Kaise Mujhe” on the other hand is a song I find very tedious to hear and is not a good love song in my mamuli opinion. Everyone involved in the song has done better love songs. Shreya ghoshal, Benny Dayal,  Rehman, Prasoon Joshi – everyone. They lyrics are also very repetitive and unimpressive.. “Awara Mann” is a better song but again not great.

Of course, “Naam Ada Likhna” is an absolute joy of a song that feels all fresh and full of love. The whole album is fantastic. But I still voted for “Ande Ka Funda” because I still find it a better song of it’s genre. (Confession – also because “Naam Ada Likhna” already had the lead and only two songs will go to the next round)

Now about the song. The song is happening in a party where Govinda and Sanjay Dutt are trying to get everyone there in on their charm.  There is everyone at this party. Amma helped me list them In order of appearance:- Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Anlu Dhawan, Himani Shivpuri, Anupam Kher, Amit Vachani, Kannu Gill (lady next to Ajit Vachani), Pramod Moutho, Twinkle Khanna, Supriya Karnik, Monica Bedi. I love the way they all join in at all times with beautiful reactions and expressions. But even if you don’t watch the song and just listen it shares the same mood. The lyrics have their own beat and its just fun every time.

The song is sung by Pratik Joseph, composed by Himesh Reshammiya and Anand Raj Anand and written by Sameer. Its from the movie ‘Jodi No. 1’ which as its title suggests is a David Dhawan directorial. Listen to the song  and tell me if you agree with my assessment on how to judge it.

#the Decade of – 2000 – 2010 #
———————————————————————

During the travels that I had in recent months, I had a trip to north. It included visiting Dalhousie, Dharamshala, and the tourist spots near to these places. The last leg of our trip was visiting Amritsar. We had planned to visit the Jalianwaala Bagh Memorial, Golden Temple and the Wagah Border. On 16th April 2023 morning we started from Dharamshala for Amritsar. Since we got late in the morning we reached Amritsar around three o’ clock in the afternoon. We straightway visited the Jalianwaala Bagh Memorial first and from there decided to go to Wagah Border first as the time for beating retreat ceremony was getting closer. So we thought that after the visit to the border we would be visiting the Golden Temple in the evening later.

It was getting late and by the time we reached the Wagah Post and it was around five in the evening. The stadium there was already fully crowded as it was a Sunday that day. We got our seats in the balcony on the top floor. The whole atmosphere there was full of joy, excitement and pride for the country. The stands were full and the music on. There were the big TV screens already on the corners of the gates at the borders and it was playing the history and achievements of BSF.

Here I am not going into the details of the parade, its process or the other technicalities and the procedures. It is all available on the internet and there is a wiki page on it too. But here I would definitely like to mention that I was totally in a different world there and so were all the members with me and I think even all the audiences gathered there. Being physically present there is totally different than watching the parade on TV screen at your home. The anchor or conductor in charge there is so full of energy that there is not a single dull moment you would feel and all our senses are only focused on the gates at the border, the tricolor at the top and the non-stop slogans enchanted by the peoples present there.

The officer in charge seemed to be carrying a non-stop flow of huge energy within him. He keep motivating the stands from each side and then combining them as whole and all responding to him with the same energy in return. I was feeling myself very fortunate to get this witnessed all and that too on the border where I can see the neighboring country’s land so near to me. It was like a dream coming true for me. Though I have traveled a lot but still a lot is still to be visited. And visiting places that we had read about in books of history since schooldays gives a rare satisfaction and a moment full of pride and love for one’s country.

This is something all that is beyond words for me. Our hearts get filled with pride, our chests pumped to the fullest and our heads held high!!! Such was this moment!!!

Later on we met the guards or the soldiers there and speak to some of them. Then only we realize how they are performing their duties there with a round the clock vigil there at the border. The soldiers come from different states and speak different languages but here they are all one. They are all Indians. And we the people are all Indians there. Not a single moment the thought of caste, creed, religion, race etc comes to our mind there.

I had to celebrate this visit and so this post.

You may call it a ‘by-product-post’ of that detailed post I had written here earlier. (And, yes, one more related to that trip is yet to come). Eventually these posts got delayed. But I had a song in my mind since long that I wished to share here. And it couldn’t have better song than a song from a Sunny Deol movie where he is performing on it in his ‘own style’.

***

And in between, after that travel the Mumba Gangout happened. And I got a chance to meet Atul ji. Another long cherished dream to meet him in person was fulfilled. Someone won’t believe this but I have to share this that many times I had dreams of meeting Atul ji and Sudhir ji in person before actually meeting them. And whenever I had such dreams I used to think if I would ever be able to meet them in person or not? But I am thankful to God for giving me this opportunity to meet them and our other senior members (second time) in this life only. 🙂
Nahin to main bhoot ban ke mandraataa phirtaa. . .

Atul ji has given us this unique blog and the many many reasons to enjoy music, nostalgia, childhood memories and the real life situations that we have passed through and that we will be going through more till we are here. This unique blog now has become a very special unique blog on internet over the globe. This blog have won millions of heart and continues to do so.

Jahaan jaatein hain chhaa jaatein hain … Atul ji tussi great ho!!

I don’t know why but sometimes I become Punjabi. (I am Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Bihari, UPian and like that … I am Indian after all 🙂 ).

Our Shri Sudhir ji has often mentioned Atul ji as our ‘fearless leader’ which also means

Sherdil Indian

What did you say? You are getting to some song or want to ‘have’ a ‘bhangraa’ (bangraa paa le … i.e. why the ‘have’ and not ‘do’ :). We have a reason for that too!!!

It is our Atul ji’s birthday today.

And I wish that when he is cutting the cake he plays this song on the speakers with a big volume if not full volume. I hope there is not any Nana Patekar ‘Agnisakshi’ type neighbor around around there.

In the first meeting with Atul ji we all were expecting him to speak more because we want to listen to him. But I think he is as ‘shy’ as we see ‘Sunny Deol’ in public appearances, but he is in full ‘action’ when he is on the blog. Sunny Paa ji also excels in ‘action’ only. 🙂

That is why they say ‘your actions should speak louder than your words’ . (In Sunny paa ji’s case only both can speak quite loud). 🙂

Oh. . . again I am back to Sunny paa ji. . .

There was a time in those ‘Gadar’ days when I used to watch every Sunny Deol movie at least two times or more.

Hoping more sunny days around …

Wishing Atul ji a very happy birthday … once again with a ‘rocking’ Sunny Deol song…

About the movie

‘Jaal – The Trap’ (2003) was directed by Guddu Dhanoa for Parth Productions, Mumbai. It was produced by Vinod Shah and Harish Shah. It had Sunny Deol, Tabu, Reema Sen, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal, Ashish Vidyarthi, Mukesh Rishi, and Amrish Puri. The  supporting cast include Virendra Saxena, Shahbaz Khan, Ragesh Asthana, Amit Bhalla, Kishori Kulkarni, Bobby Saini, Prem Lala, Raj Nair, Ghanshyam Rohera, Susheel Parashar, Raj Tilak, Deepak Bhatia, Nikhil Kumar, Rocky Fernandes, Sanjeev Nanda, and others.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by Rajiv Kaul and Praful Parekh. Dialogues for this movie were written by Dilip Shukla. Sanjay Verma was the editor of this film. Background music for this movie was given by Aadesh Shrivastava. The action by Tinu Verma in this movie is brilliant and that all comes in the second half of the movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.03.2003.

The movie has six songs. Sameer and Anand Raj Anand are the lyricists for this movie. And songs were composed by Anand Raj Anand. Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Zubin, Chitra, and Anand Raj Anand had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

I would like to mention in very brief about this movie that this movie had a very good plot with a ‘tricky-twist’. From the cast we can easily guess that the performances were good too. But still this movie failed to make an impact on the box office. It was because of the length of the movie and especially the first half of the movie which got a bad review by all. Had the first half of this movie been edited and the film was reduced in length like a Hollywood movie, it would have been a great movie. Yes, of course, the songs also needed to be ‘cut’ except today’s song. 🙂

This movie was shot at some beautiful outdoor locations in New Zealand, Kulu, Manali, Dalhousie, Shimla, Bikaner and Nasik. This song is picturised in Shimla, at the picturesque Ridge location on the Mall. The hero of the movie Sunny Deol as expected excels in ‘action’ but none the less whenever he is doing a ‘foot tapping’ performance like in the today’s song is always a ‘treat’ to watch and enjoyable too.

Major Amrish Kaul (Amrish Puri) has been given with the responsibility of protecting Anita Chaudhury (Reema Sen) who is a daughter of Minister Bhagwat Chaudhury (Virendra Saxena). Assisting Major Kaul in this assignment is Captain Amarjeet Singh (Shahbaz Khan). Anita is in New Zealand and terror groups are planning to kidnap her.

In this gang we have Naved Rabbani (Ashish Vidyarthi) and Junaid Afghani (Mukesh Rishi). Naved Rabbani is already arrested earlier and in police custody. To get Naved released, the ‘terrorists’ have plans to kidnap Anita. Anita has been given special instructions for venturing outside and the limits have been prescribed which she should not cross over. But she ventures out with her friends for skiing. As expected the terrorists group attacks Anita but their attempt is foiled by Major Kaul and his army.

Anita begs pardon of Major Uncle after this incident. Major Uncle is supposed to travel to India but he is trying to cancel this visit. But finally, Anita accepts her mistake and assures to obey the instructions of Mr. Kaul further. Kaul Saab is travelling to India and Anita insists to see him off at the airport. So she accompanies him to the airport. On the way she inquires about the family of Major Kaul and the family members. When Major tells her that he has son named Ajay (Sunny Deol), she asks what he is doing ‘kya kartaa hai wo’.

‘Woh kya kartaa hai aur kya karnaa chaahtaa hai inhin sawaalon ke jawaab to dhhoondhhne ki koshish kar rahaa hoon. Jo main chaahtaa hoon woh chaahtaa nahin, aur jo woh kartaa hai meri samajh mein nahin aata’.

‘Magar, aisaa kartaa kya hai?’

Here, enters Ajay on the screen with a mandolin in his hand singing this song.

. . .

This film makes its debut on the blog today.

Enjoy 🙂

For Atul ji – jahaan jaatein hain chhaa jaatein hain – musical blogs ki duniyaa mein ‘NUMBER ONE’ .

Today 23rd March 2021 is the ninetieth remembrance anniversary of martyr dome of Sardar Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. They were hanged to death by the British regime on 23rd March 1931.

On this occasion as a tribute in remembrance of these great sons of this soil here is a song from the movie ‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ (2002).

As I had mentioned in my earlier post on the blog, in the year 2002 there were three movies released on the life of Bhagat Singh;

  • 23rd March 1931 Shaheed
  • The Legend of Bhagat Singh
  • Shaheed-E-Azam

I would like to reproduce here what Dharmendra expressed about this movie his home production, (as appearing on the blurb of the audio cassette);

It is not the first time in the history of Indian Cinema that a film has been inspired by India’s favorite revolutionary. And quite honestly, it might not even be the last. This Sikh youth of character so powerful and deep represents the meaning of true patriotism and fearlessness to one and all. It can be assured that every time a movie is made on Bhagat Singh, not one person leaves the cinema hall carrying the same heart with which he arrives. It is not just his sacrifice that moves you; his biggest revolutionary thought and his smallest patriotic action, stir your blood inside. Bhagat Singh cannot be imitated, no matter how impressed you might feel. And yet, the one reason he chose death over life was to create a thousand of his kind so that each one of them could bear the depth of the same patriotic fervor to serve their country.
– Dharmendra

I was staying at Bareilly when this movie was released in 2002 and I had watched both the movies simultaneously i.e. ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ and ‘23rd March 1931-Shaheed’. I remember both the movie were welcomed by huge crowds in their first week of release and thereafter ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ had a good run on the box office, better than the today’s movie.

‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ was directed by Guddu Dhanoa for ‘Sunny Super Sound Presentation’. It was produced by Dharmendra.

It had Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Amrita Singh, Rahul Dev, Akshay Anand, Vicky Ahuja, Divya Dutta, Raja Bundela, Suresh Oberoi, Shakti Kapoor, Vivek Shauq, Samaresh Rautrai, Indal Singh, Sanjay Tripathi, Tej Sapru, Rajesh Khera, Deepak Sharma, Suresh Chatwal, Sachin Khedekar, Manoj Tiwari, Rana Jung Bahadur, Ishrat Ali, Imran Khan, Master Atit, Master Honey and Aishwarya Rai (in friendly appearance).

Screenplay of this movie is written by Sutanu Gupta and Dialogues of this movie are written by Sanjay S. Masoom Editing of this movie is done by Keshav Naidu. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 30.05.2002.

This movie has seven songs, written by Dev Kohli. The song “Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna” by Ramprasad Bismil was included in the movie and with it the total number of songs makes it to eight. Songs in this film are sung by Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Vinod Rathod, Hans Ran Hans (as per titles of the movie) and Bhupinder Singh, Mohd Salamat and Veer Rajendra (as mentioned in the blurb of the audio cassette of this movie and in addition to the names mentioned in the titles of the movie).

Today’s song is sung by Veer Rajinder and lyrics are by Dev Kohli. This song is in two parts (or may be three parts) in the movie as per video links available in the domain.

With the today’s song this movie ‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ (2002) makes its debut on the blog.

Let us now listen to the today’s song. . .

Happy Independence Day

15th August- a very very important day in the life of any Indian. The day we are thankful to our predecessors who laid down their lives for getting us freedom from foreign rule.

Predecessors includes even those unnamed freedom fighters who walked along with the leaders of those times. It includes those who did not like to be ordered around by people who didn’t have an iota of understanding why India was the way it was.

Thinking back we can see that beginning from Alexander there have been regular invasions and intrusions into India. Our history books have taught us that prior to that there were the Aryans who moved in to make this their land. Plus we have read how the Persians fled from their country and were given a place in our land and hearts. All this was before the Muslim rulers of say Turkish or Mughal dynasty. Some of them came to plunder or conquer; they either stayed back or plundered and left. But those were the times when this part of the continent was made up of various small kingdoms or states and each was a country of its own.

As I have understood Indian History, it was only after Akbar took charge in the north and some of the existing rulers of that period accepted his supremacy, was there a semblance of oneness among those who, he ruled over, in that region. Even at that time we had chieftains or Kings or Ranas who opposed being ruled by an outsider. This I am speaking of the 1500s when Rana Pratap was against bowing to the might of Akbar. Similarly, about 100 years later, we have had Chhatrapati Shivaji standing up for his right over his motherland and fighting the forces of Aurangazeb.

The European rulers also looked towards India around the 1500s when the Portuguese rule began which lasted till 1961. The French and the British followed in the 1600s. They started as traders and stayed back to rule.
A few small kingdoms joined forces to stand against the Muslim rulers. But when the people realized that the Europeans had also taken over a large part of the territory and were not interested in fair governance they united to try and shake the reigns off. At that point there was no difference between Hindu or Muslim kingdoms and we had a Rani Lakshmibai, Tatya Tope, Nanashaeb working alongside Begum Hazrat Mahal and Bahadurshah Zafar. There were numerous smaller kings too who joined hands for this purpose.

Rana Pratap, Chhtrapati Shivaji, Rani Lakshmibai, Tatya Tope, Nanasaheb, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Begum Hazrat Mahal are the predecessors of Mahatma Gandhi, Balgangadhar Tilak, Netaji, Sardar Patel, Pandit Nehru etc. who nailed the final nails into foreign rule and united all the small kingdoms into what is today INDIA.

All these so-called outsiders have left their mark on the psyche of the country. There are elements in our cuisine for which we can thank the Persians:- it is said that the national favourite Samosa is of Persian ancestry (should ask some researcher for confirmation). The Biriyani was introduced to us by the Muslim rulers. We should be thankful to the Europeans for bringing the cake to us. Just as these outsiders liked our spices we also accepted their soups, salads and art of baking and made it our own.

Those days most of our clothing used to be one long un-stitched garment we don’t even know who taught us the art of stitching.
In our haste to rectify what has happened in the 200 to 300 years of foreign rule we should stop to think what all we can give up. We are slaves to our modes of transport and communication which was not there before the 18th century- posts, telegraph, vehicles, trains, phones can we live without them? Can we live without electricity? Are we ready to give up cooking with LPG which is more comfortable than cooking with firewood. And most important we converse also freely in a foreign language. There are many among us who cannot write a sentence in their own mother tongue without errors. (I plead guilty)

Yes we have our own culture that makes us proud of being Indians. We are proud that we welcome everyone with open arms. We have a concept of “Attithi Devo Bhava”. Even if later we regret welcoming them as it happened when the foreign rulers came.

We are proud that there is a family system in place and even in this 21st century a child obeys his/her parents and elders even when he/ she is 50 or grownup or old. We look down upon people who don’t take care or abandon their elders. We still have mothers worrying about their children through her lifetime. Even children know that they have a family to fall back on in times of crisis.

All the things about India and Indians that I want to state is present in this new (by blog’s standards) song so I shall jump to the song as my post has become rather long.

The song is clearly an extension or we can say inspired from Manoj Kumar’s “Hai preet jahaan ki reet sada” that came in 1970. And the choreography seems to be inspired by “pag ghunghru baand meera naachi thi” to start off with.

The song is set in a restaurant. The hero (Govinda) has just been shown the door at a job interview where (according to the interviewer) he has given an absurd answer to the question “Tell me something about India”. He equates India with Cow saying that ‘a cow is our mother just as India is our mother. It has four legs India has four pillars- Hindu Mulsim Sikh Issai (christianity)’ He says a few more similarities between India and a Cow and he is thrown out. He sings this song on his way out and the public present at the restaurant appreciates and enjoy themselves. But the end result is he still doesn’t get the job but that is beyond the realm of today’s post.

It is sung, written and composed by Anand Raj Anand in the 1998 Raveena Tandon-Shilpa Shetty-Govinda starrer “Pardesi Babu”. The movie and the singer/lyricist/ composer also make their debut on the blog.

Jai Hind!!!

Song-It happens only in India (Pardesi Babu)(1998) Singer-Anand Raj Anand, Lyrics-Anand Raj Anand, MD-Anand Raj Anand

Lyrics

(chorus)

jahaan paaon mein mein paayal,

jahaan jung pe jaaye sipaahi toh khud sajani tilak lagaaye
jahaan jung pe jaaye sipaahi toh khud sajani tilak lagaaye
jahaan jung pe jaaye sipaahi toh khud sajani tilak lagaaye
it happens only in India,
it happens only in India

oh ho oh ho ohhoo
oh ho oh ho oh hoo

jahaan din nikale sunkar shlok gurbaani aur azaan,
allah o allah
jahaan din nikale sunkar shlok gurbaani aur azaan
jahaan mazhab se ooncha hai insaan saare ek samaan
arre aanch nahin hai saanch ko chahe dekh le sari duniya
it happens only in India,
it happens only in India

(some swar by chorus)

kahin hota hai re bhaiya
it happens only in India,
it happens only in India

saawan ke jhoole kahin pe baisaakhi ke mele
arre saawan ke jhoole kahin pe baisaakhi ke mele
lagta hai khud kudrat iss dharti pe aakar khele
it happens only in India,
it happens only in India

it happens only in India
it happens only in India
it happens only in India,
it happens only in India
it happens only in India,
it happens only in India
it happens only in India,
it happens only in India
it happens only in India
