Today’s selection is in the voice of Geeta Dutt. Coming to think of it, it is just these two voices that have the capacity and the capability to make a foot tapper song – Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. I cannot think of any other female singer who can manage songs of the type we are discussing in this series. There could be exceptions but I cannot readily recall any right away.

“Faraar” is a movie title that we come across at ten years gap beginning from 1955 onwards till 1975. We have had “Faraar”(1955), “Faraar”(1965) as well as “Faraar”(1975). Today’s song is from the 1955 film ‘Faraar’.
We have already discussed the happenings in Hindi film industry in 1955, in the previous episode. Name of this film had not featured anywhere, simply because it was neither a famous film nor a very successful film. Its music too was nothing to write home about. Even in such a film, we find a gem or a song special for other reasons. I selected this film song for few reasons.

Writing on old film songs and that too on unreleased film songs is a very hard job. Firstly, hardly any information is available on Internet or in books. Secondly, controversies crop up on the statements made in the write up. India being notoriously hopeless as far as recording history of films, music or songs is concerned, it is extremely difficult to arrive at a definite and undisputable conclusion. Most artistes of those times are beyond our reach and if anyone is still alive, he may not remember the facts properly due to old age. In my work in this field, I have found that old age artistes either don’t remember or believe firmly in wrong/desired events and timings making a mess of the whole information.

Today’s song is from the film Veena-1948. It is sung by Chitalkar, ie. C.Ramchandra, under the baton of Anil Biswas. C.Ramchandra used to respect Anil Biswas very much and Anil Biswas knew that he was a talented composer, who would carry forward the use of western instruments started by Anil ji in HFM. Anil ji liked his style of singing and used to call him to sing in his films,whenever there was an opportunity.
