Bappi Da as he was fondly called has been known for the legacy of his disco music that he brought to the Hindi Films. 6th February 2022 followers of Indian music, across the genres of Bhav-geet, Film Sangeet, Bhajans and any other that we can think of, lost the most accomplished, sought after, loved (& any other add-ons that we know of) singer. She went by the name Lata Mangeshkar fondly addressed as Lata Didi by the multitude of her followers. She was the go-to voice (a modern day term for first choice) of all music composers for their debut films – remember ‘ghar aaja ghir aayi’ RD Burman, ‘Parasmani’ & its songs which was the first released film of Laxmi- Pyare. Even Madan Mohan is said to have approached Lata Mangeshkar to sing for his debut film ‘Aankhen’ but could get her into the recording room only for his next ‘ Adaa’ which released in 1951.

In the 1970s, Basu Chatterjee was one of those Hindi film directors who made films on the stories which a majority of the filmi audience could relate to their own every day life. Starting with ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969), he made the classic films such as ‘Rajanigandha’ (1974), ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1975), ‘Chitchor’ (1976), ‘Khatta Meetha’ (1977), ‘Swaami’ (1977), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979), ‘Shaukeen’ (1982) etc. But in 1990s and thereafter, Basu Chatterjee seems to have lost his magic touch to his ‘middle of the road’ cinemas.

‘Film Hi Film’ (1983), was produced by Shahab Ahmed and was directed by Hiren Nag. The film starred Pran in a role of a film producer with Seema Deo as his wife and Ramesh Deo as his Secretary. Rest of the cast consisted of Raj Kishor, Birbal, Mohan Choti, Pandit Iqbal, Mulchand, and the new faces, Furqan, Bipin, Sonia and Beena. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Kamaleshwar. It was a novel idea to incorporate scenes and songs from some of the incomplete/shelved films of 1950s, 60s and 70s into the story of the film.

Hullo Atuldom
Vani Jairam (30th November 1945- 4th February 2023) was a playback singer who was known to easily adapt to any difficult composition & vocal range. She was the youngest artist to be awarded the “Sangeet Peet Samman”. She won the National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer three times and also has won State Government awards from the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. In 2012, she was honoured with the ‘Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South’ for her achievements in South Indian film music. She has recorded songs in most Indian languages except Sanskrit. She was well versed in various forms of music -Carnatic, Hindustani, thumri, ghazal, and bhajan. Apart from singing, she was also a songwriter, composer, and painter.

Hullo Atuldom
19th June is the birthday of actor Raj Kiran. He will be 73 today.
Recently I saw Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Arth’ (1982) and I thought such a good-looking person. He was playing the part of Raj who falls in love with the recently jilted Pooja (Shabana Azmi); that was an odd pairing. But they looked good together. Raj Kiran had made his debut in 1975 through BR Ishara’s ‘Kaagaz Ki Nao’ with Sarika as his co-star. His next release was ‘Shiksha’ (1978) which was directed by S Ramanathan. It was produced by Tarachand Barjatya – meaning Rajshri productions.
