Moving ahead with the series on Asha Bhosle singing for actresses whose first names begin with the letter “A”, we come to Archana Joglekar.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, three actresses from the Marathi film industry crossed over to Hindi cinema with varying degrees of success. They were Archana Joglekar, Ashwini Bhave, and Varsha Usgaonkar. Although the Hindi film industry was based in Bombay (now Mumbai), only a few leading Marathi actresses were able to establish themselves in Hindi films. Usha Kiran and Jayshree Gadkar were notable exceptions. Most other Marathi actresses found work primarily in supporting roles.
I first started noticing Archana Joglekar (without knowing her name at the time) in the early 1980s as a model and in Marathi programmes on Bombay Doordarshan. By the mid-1980s, she had also begun appearing in Marathi films. Soon thereafter, she made her Hindi film debut with Mardon Mein Mard (1987). She subsequently played a leading role in an Odia film and, later in her career, also acted in a Tamil film. During the 1990s, she gradually reduced her film appearances but expanded her repertoire by working in television serials. It was also during this period that she married Dr. Nirmal Muley and moved to the United States.

For my next song we turn to a Lata Mangeshkar melody – “Sultana Mera Naam Hai” from Sangram (1976) which is a lively cabaret-style dance number composed by Bappi Lahiri with lyrics by Gauhar Kanpuri. It is a nightclub-oriented songs and reflects the changing musical trends of the mid-1970s, when Western rhythms and cabaret sequences had become popular in Hindi cinema.
Musically, the song combines a strong dance beat with brass instrumentation and a catchy refrain. Bappi Lahiri’s arrangement is energetic but not yet as disco-driven as the style he would become famous for a few years later. Instead, it sits somewhere between the traditional Hindi film cabaret of the 1960s and the emerging disco sound of the late 1970s.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee has been known to make family-oriented films with intricate human relationship issues presented through light comedy. ‘Anand’ (1970), Baawarchi’ (1972), ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975), ‘Gol Maal’ (1979), ‘Khubsoorat’ (1980), ‘Naram Garam’ (1981) and ‘Rang Birangi’ (1983) are some of his well-known films in this genre. There is another of his film, ‘Kisee Se Na Kehnaa’ (1983) which is making a debut on the Blog after about 18 years since the Blog started. This is a lesser-known film of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. I had heard the name of the film but was not aware that it was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee until a couple of days back.
‘Kisee Se Na Kehnaa’ (1983) was produced by Jaywant Pathare and Ashok Rawat and was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The cast included Farooque Sheikh and Deepti Naval in lead roles supported by Utpal Dutt, Saeed Jafferi, S N Bannerjee, Deven Verma, Lalita Kumari, Asha Sharma, Ketki Dave, Kanu Roy etc. Prema Narayan and Yunus Parvez made the guest appearances in the film. The film belongs to light comedy genre.

In this second episode, I will give a list of actresses whose name begins with B and who have already had songs in the blog that were sung by Asha Bhonsle and were picturised on them. Unlike the letter A which yielded 30 plus actresses, there are only 10 actresses with letter B in the blog :-

‘Jyoti’ (1981) was produced and directed by Promod Chakravarty. The cast included Jeetendra and Hema Malini in lead roles supported by Ashok Kumar, Vijayendra Ghatge, Shashikala, Padma Khanna, Deven Verma, Sulochana, Dhumal, Tarun Ghosh, Sajjan, Jayshree T, Meena T etc. Aruna Irani, Ajit and Om Shivpuri made the guest appearances, The film was based on a Bengali novel, ‘Swayamsiddha’ (1943) written by Manilal Bannerjee.

It was 29 days ago (on 9 January 2026) that we had reached blog song post number 19800. That song post also happened to be 300th duets of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. If 300 duets of a pair of singers is an enormous achievement then what will we say about twice that number of duets ? 600 duets !! That is a mind boggling mind numbing number of duets. This feat is achieved by Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhonsle in the blog.
