Every morning I walk my pets by turns. That is a good time for thinking and getting interesting thoughts. I realised that our blog centuries (when they are taking place at their normal pace) are like lunar months. In the past, we would complete our centuries in 15-16 days which was like one paksh of a lunar month. Nowadays we are taking nearly twice as long to complete a century. In other words, our centuries these days take as long as a lunar month. In other words, these days we are getting one century post per month.

The film ‘Sushila’ of 1966 – and a peculiar turn of events as we tried to ‘Yippeee’ this film, earlier on 26th January. And then there is another very interesting quirk related with this post and this Yippeee action today.

The blog activities have picked up pace quite a bit in this new year. Almost all contributors are quite active. I hope this pace is sustained, and does not peter out like the enthusiastic short term flings of the resolutioners. Gajendra ji had commented that it generally is a euphoria that lasts about a week into the new year. But in this case, ‘रब नजर ना लगाए’, we seem to be going great guns for over three weeks now. So far, it portends all good for the continuing activity. Now only if responses in the comments column also pick up pace. 🙂

Greetings to all readers and friends, on the occasion of marking the Republic Day event of our country.

In the notes exchanged with Atul ji over the past week, it comes about that the 1966 film ‘Sushila’ is just one song short of being a Yippeee film on the blog. And quite fortunately, the remaining song in the list is actually very appropriate for the celebration of 26th January. Scrambling to locate this song, we are unsuccessful to find it posted online. And so the quick decision was to upload the song, post it for 26th January celebrations and in the process add one more to the list of Yippeee’d films.

In the process of realizing this plan, as I checked the songs folder for this film in my collection, I was in for a very peculiar surprise. I checked and checked again with the Geet Kosh and also with the list of songs available on the blog. There had to be an error somewhere. Actually, the songs folder in my collection was showing one song extra than the 6 songs that are supposed to be there. Checking with Geet Kosh, the number seems to tally. Our Yippeee films lists also shows this film as being one song short. So how come I have an extra song.

Today (11th December, 2017 is the nineteenth ‘Remembrance anniversary’ (06.02.1915 – 11.12.1998) of Ramchandra Narayanji Dwivedi whom we fondly remember and whose name has been engraved in the history of Indian Cinema and Poetry as Kavi Pradeep.

hum kahin bhi hon
chale aayenge

What an extraordinary promise this is.

We had a small get together of music lovers, earlier in the day today. And for the day it is, part of our conversation revolved around Rafi Sb, and his persona, and his legacy. ‘God’s Own Man’ is the phrase expressed by one of the gathering. Certainly, all people are God’s people. But then some are special. They are ‘God’s Own People’. Humble and giving – the two traits that stand out as shining beacons in this industry that is famous for cutthroat competition, and the rule of money power. So much corruption and cruelty bleeds into it, and in turn, generates more cruelty and heartlessness.

Under this series today we have this beautiful ‘Sufi Qawwali’ composed by C.Arjun and which is written by none other than Sahir Ludhianvi for the movie ‘Nawaab Sahib-1978’. I have vague memories of watching this movie in late seventies or early eighties, but I do not remember much about this movie or its story line. The only memory of this movie that I had carried over in my growing years and thereafter was this song ‘Hum Mein Hai Kya Ke Hamen Koi Haseena Chaahe’ sung by Mohd Rafi.

“सावन की परी चुप चुप है खड़ी

I came across this song for the first time, few weeks ago. It has been sitting in the hard disk for quite some time now, one of a set of songs of Rafi Sb that Bakshish Singh ji gave to me. On some prompting thought in the mind, I just played this song, as I was searching for a song starting with ‘स’, and goodness, just could not believe that this wonderful gem of a song has been sitting away from mainstream listening. Later, when I checked online, this song is posted on YT more than once, implying it is not so rare as I would imagine. Oh but, what a song, what a song.

[A poet’s perspective it is. We are all aware that the life breath will cease one day. But still, when a dear one departs, the sadness in the heart expresses itself in these very words. . . “Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahaan Mein Kho Gaye”].

The words are from the pen of Sahir – the poet extraordinaire, whose poetry has touched every strand in the fabric of life, every passion, every sentiment of the human psyche. A poet who has given us near about seven hundred film songs, that express a multitude of emotions coloring the canvas of life.

Remembering Sahir Sb, on the anniversary of his passing away today (25th Oct, 1980).

Wow and wow, what a song. Same story, same pattern – production house is obscure, film is obscure, actors not so well accepted as grade A material, music director not so well recognized as top of the line. And that is where we find some the most titillating gems of music. Under different circumstances, this song could have been top of charts. E.g. if this song was performed on screen by, say, Shammi Kapoor, well then it would have been treated as a hit, and would have found its place in the listings of timeless classics of Rafi Sb’s fun songs.
