“Insaaniyat” (1955) was the first (and last) time that Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand were cast together in one movie. Dev Anand was (mis)cast as a dacoit wearing a mustache who gets reformed when a girl (Bina Rai) slaps him. 😉

“Nausherwan e Adil” (1957) was a blockbuster movie produced by G P Sippy. This movie had some superb songs in it.

There are a few great movies in 1950s whose songs were hugely popular in 1950s. One was “jhaanjhar” and other was “Jhamela”. The prints of these movies were lost in a fire and we no longer have any prints of these movies.

I have been posting the songs of “Sargam” (1950) here these days. It is while posting these songs that I am discovering these songs for the first time. What wonderful songs these are ! And I am also surprised at the number of such songs. There are at least a dozen such songs, and all of them just mind boggling. And it is just as mind boggling to realise that this movie has been forgotten today.

Many people, including me, may only be aware of “Sargam” (1979), which had some nice songs in them. But there was another movie of this name, viz “Sargam” (1950). This older movie was one of the biggest hit movies of its time and its songs were just amazing.

Among the major contributors in the development of Bollywood mov ie music, C Ramchandra’s name will always figure very prominently. The kind of music that he came up with is simply mind boggling. On the one hand he composed songs based on classical music as well as Indian folk music, and on the other hand he also composed songs based on western music.

Jaa ri jaa ri o kaari badariyaa

When one watches old Bollywood movies, one notices that people went about their lives in a laid back and relaxed manner. A typical girl would go to school/ college and while at home she would learn knitting/ cooking etc from her mother. She would also learn singing/ dancing from a tutor who would come to her home to teach her these arts. The girl would display her newly acquired prowess of singing / dancing in front of guests , parents and her guru.
