Her trade mark smile with a cheerful face which many of us have seen during her six decades of filmy career, masked her chequered life – both personal and professional. The tough life which she had gone through in her childhood made her to accept any type of roles out of the financial necessity. That made Shammi to act in various genre of roles. In the event, she became more well-known in her character roles than her lead/second lead roles of early 1950s.

‘Laagee Naahee Chhoote Ram’ (1963) was a Bhojpuri film produced by Ramayan Tiwari and directed by Kundan Kumar. The cast included Ashim Kumar and Kumkum in lead roles with the supporting roles of Indrani Mukherjee, Nazir Hussain, Anwar Hussain, Tiwari, Ram Singh, Leela Mishra, S N Tripathi with Helen and Mehmood making special appearances. This was the third film in Bhojpuri dialect, the first and second being ‘Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’ (1962) and ‘Bidesiyaa’(1963), respectively. Nazir Hussain wrote screenplay and dialogues, apart from doing an important supporting role in this film.

‘Kaabli Khan’ (1963) was produced and directed by K Amarnath under his banner, K Amarnath Productions. The cast included Ajit, Helen, Jayant, Ulhas, Samson, Salim Khan, Indira Bansal, Mukri, W M Khan, Amrit Rana etc. The film belonged to costume drama genre. This was the first film for Helen as a lead actress. Incidentally, it was also in K Amarnath’s film in which Helen got her first opportunity of solo dance performance. Another interesting thing about this film is that for the first time, Salim Khan and Helen have worked together though they did not have any dialogues between them. In this film, Salim Khan had a role of a prince. Except for a couple of dialogues, he was mostly seen as a prisoner and hence his exposure in the film was limited.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film- Navratri-1955.
The word ‘Navratri’ evokes memories of the festive atmosphere of Dussehra and the following fun days of Diwali, just about 3 weeks ahead. During our childhood, this was the time to buy new clothes or something which the parents had promised to give us at Diwali time. In the evening a gang of surrounding friends used to go visiting our friends in other areas. Meeting elders and seeking their blessings was mandatory.
