Today’s song is a devotional chorus song from an old film, ” Prithvi Putra”-38. HFGK indicates that it was a Mythological film. I could not get a clue anywhere what the story was about. The film was made by the film factory, Ranjit Movietone- where, at a time, at least 4 to 5 films used to be on the floors doing shooting, not counting if any team was on outdoor shooting schedule.

As per the available 1938 issues of Film India, when Prithvi Putra’s shooting was going on, some more film shootings, planning meetings and scheduling were underway at the same time. Films like Gorakh Aaya, Achhut, Sant Tulsidas, Taxiwali, The Cat (Billi) and Prof. Waman, M.Sc. were the films involved in the studio activity. It is sad that review of this film is not available to us since all issues of 1938 are not available on Internet. That review could have at least told us what the story of this movie was.

Today’s song is from film ‘Adhoori Kahani’ (1939).

This film is made by Ranjit Movietone of Sardar Chandulal Shah. A lot has already been written about him, Gauhar Mamajiwala and Ranjit Studios, so I am skipping that part. In the late 30s and early 40s, i.e. from about 1937 to 1947, Hindi film industry was making films emphasizing social reforms, society needs, peaceful coexistence of different religions and also raising a voice against the sinful customs prevalent then in Indians, all over the country. Some of the topics were, child marriages, marriages between the very young and the old, dowry demands, disowning parents, gambling, criminal activities etc.

Toady’s song is from film ‘Achhoot’ (1940),sung by composer Gyan Dutt and singer actress Vasanti.

The second world war started from 1939, but its effects started being felt in India after 1940 only. The Government became alert and sensitive. Lots of restrictions were put on Imports and Exports. All exports to Germany and Japan were banned. Foreign travel came under Government microscope. Imports were restricted to only essential goods. Raw film stock came under Government control (and naturally became available freely in black market at exorbitant price). Taking advantage of the situation, Government declared that those film production houses who help Government in its war efforts, by making films with pro Govt. themes, would get raw film on priority.
