Music Directors, Ravi (Ravi Shankar Sharma) and Hemant Kumar (Hemant Mukherjee or Hemant Mukhopadhyay as he is known in Bangla films industry) had an interesting and collaborative partnership in the 1950s. As revealed in his multiple TV interviews, Ravi came to Mumbai in 1950 to become a playback singer. He started as a chorus singer and his first song as a chorus singer was for zara jhoom le jawaani ka zamaana in ‘Naujawaan’ (1951).

Today’s song, rather a beautiful Bhajan, is from the film Bhagwat Mahima-55. Earlier 3 songs/Bhajans of this film are discussed here, so it will be the 4th Bhajan from this film to appear here.
The film was made by Filmistan. It was directed by a veteran All-rounder Vithaldas Panchotiya and the music was composed by Hemant kumar- who was famous for creating Bhajans in films.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Film – 31

In Balochistan province of Pakistan, there is a well-known Hindu temple, Hinglaj Mata Temple locally known as Nani Ka Mandir. This temple is regarded as one of the 51 Shaktipeeths and is revered by Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims from Balochistan and Sindh especially the Zikri Balochs who are also the patrons of the temple. The temple is located at the banks of River Hinglaj with a rock carved deity in a cave. This temple is ‘kul devta’ (family deity) of many Hindu khatri families of Sindh, Balochistan and also of some of those residing in India and abroad.

A voice that sounds quite mature, dripping with heavy bass – a baritone that appeared to emerge from somewhere deep inside. Playing this sound on the songs like “Zindagi Pyaar Ki Do Chaar Ghadi Hoti Hai”, or “Lele Dard Paraaya Kar De Door Gham Ka Saaya”, or “Jaane Wo Kaise Log The Jinke Pyaar Ko Pyaar Mila”, “Ganga Aaye Kahaan Se. . .”, and many more of this ilk, sounds so natural and, well, so suitable. Today (7 may 2020) is the 159th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861- 7 August 1941).
Everyone knows a lot about Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. He was not just a Nobel Prize winning poet, his acccomplishments, achievements and influence go much more farther than that. Curiously, his influence on our life is often subtle and goes unnoticed. But it is very much there.
He has influenced Indian movies, including Hindi movies as well. He was in fact the person writing the national anthem of India (and subsequently Bangladesh as well). The national anthem of India was already included in a Hindi movie called “Hamraahi”(1945) beore it could become national anthem. So, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore got credited as a lyricist and music director in this Hindi movie posthumously, but before India could achieve her independence.

Regional language songs in Hindi movies- 1

I had heard of ‘Rabindra Sangeet’ many years back in the context of our national anthem. Without knowing much about Rabindra Sangeet, in my younger days, I used to think that like Hindustani classical music, Carnatic classical music, folk music, Western classical music etc, Rabindra Sangeet was a different genre of music. (Now that I know it, I was not off the mark then). When I got associated with our Blog about 10 years back, I started looking at the Hindi film songs in a wider perspective encompassing, among other things, the genres of and the artists behind the Hindi film music. It was during the course of writing articles for the Blog covering songs of the golden period of Hindi film music, singers, lyricists and music directors that I came to know much about Rabindra Sangeet and its influence in Hindi film songs.
