“Sahib Bahadur” (1977) was one of the forgettable movies of Dev Anand. Incidentally, it was a remake of another Dev Anand movie called “Afsar” (1950) which was presumably less forgettable.

I have mentioned earlier that Dev Anand outlived his stay as a leading man in Bollywood movies. as a result, many stories with great ideas flopped just because Dev Saab insisted on playing the hero in those movies. In fact, legend has it that Prakash Mehra had wanted to cast Dev Saab in “Zanjeer”. Dev Saab liked the role, but he wanted Prakash Mehra to sell him the story so that he could make this movie in his own way ( and hopefully add one more flop to his CV). Thankfully Prakash Mehra refused and the rest, as they say, is history with Amitabh Bachchan playing that role.

Dev Anand was well past his sell by date as a hero in 1970s, but Dev Saab did not realise that and continued to act in one flop movie after another. In the process, many nice songs picturised on him suffered the same fate as the movie.

In Bollywood movies, hero and heroines would traditionally meet in gardens and would be going round the trees, much like gorillas or chimps going through their mating rituals. Being more evolved than the apes, they would sing a duet while running around trees.

“Raja” (1975) was a movie starring Rishi kapoor and Sulakshana Pandit. Few people ( including me) were aware of the existence of this movie. I was of course aware about the songs without knowing which movie these songs were from.

“Zakhmee” (1975) had quite a few wonderful songs. For long I thought that these songs were composed by R D Burman. It was much later that I realised that this movie in fact was the debut movie of Bappi Lahiri as a music director.

Just listen to this Kishore Kumar song ! I have heard this song quite a few times, and all these days I thought that this song was written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R D Burman. But no, the lyricist is Kaifi Azmi and this song is composed by Madan Mohan.

Bollywood movie makers often tend to have same titles as that of old movies. For instance, I am aware of three movies titled “Adhikar”. The most well known of them for me is the movie of 1971 which was a musical blockbuster ( though the movie itself did not do well). There was another movie by this name in 1986.

“Joshila” (1973) is one of the lesser known movies starring Dev Anand with the then young heroines Hema Malini and Rakhi. The movie failed at the box office and few people recall what this movie was all about.
