The sounds of restlessness coming from a restive heart. A voice that exists in a multitude of colors and flavors and moods. A voice that has entertained the listeners for the better part of four decades. A voice that has left an indelible stamp on the history of Hindi Cinema and Hindi Film Music. A voice that holds the trademark on the ultimate songs of fun that are completely and irrefutably non-replicable, priceless gems of yodeling, mimicry and voice modulation. A voice that became the alter-ego of many a successful careers, so much so that in the 70s and 80s, the lead male actors would not consider their careers and performances complete unless this voice was in the background. Even thespian Dilip Kumar, after having spent three decades in the industry, eventually performed on screen, with this voice behind him (‘Sagina’, 1974). A voice that was nominated 27 times for Filmfare awards for best male singer, in a span of just 16 years (1970 to 1986), winning it eight times in the process. A voice whose power of influence simply could not be matched, especially during the peak years in the 1970s and 80s.

This is a Duet by Kishore Kumar, Anup Kumar and chorus from film-HUM DO DAKU-1967.
KISHORE KUMAR (4-8-1929 to 13-10-1987) was a colourful, multifaceted and interesting personality. You can find actors who sang song, actors who gave music, actors who directed films, you can even find actors who sang and gave music, but KISHORE KUMAR was the only person who acted, sang, composed music, produced and directed films, wrote Lyrics, screenplay and stories and edited films. For one man to do all these things successfully is nothing short of a Wonder. I do not think that there is any other person in the whole world of Cinema, in any country, who handled all these activities with aplomb and expertise !

My first introduction to Uttam Kumar was way back in the childhood years when, for a long time, I used to confuse a lot between him and Biswajeet. It was in the years when watching television was a new adventure every day. One would scour around the neighborhood and get inside a friend’s or a familiar person’s home. Of course, as an uninvited intruder, one had to watch whatever was being telecast. In any case, Doordarshan was the only channel and there was no other option :). Some known programs would be a fixture that everyone watched. At other times, one would just intrude into whatever was playing on the screen.

Today (18 july 2013) is the first death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29 december 1942- 18 july 2012). Much have been written about him since late 1960s when he burst into the Hindi movie scene and reigned supreme. Whatever can be said and written about him has been written. Since I have to discuss a Rajesh Khanna song on this occasion, so let me also add some of my observations about Rajesh Khanna, with the full benefit of hindsight.

I always thought it was necessary to have some degree of writing pedigree to claim to have the famed “writer’s block” problem but, if the last few days are any indication, apparently this affliction is not limited to the writing community.
