“Jaani Dushman”(1979) was produced and directed by Rajkumar Kohli. The movie had received enormous publicity before its release. It was a multistarrer movie, though the stars who mattered to be those days, viz. Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra did not figure in the movie. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Premnath, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Amrish Puri, Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Sarika, Yogita Bali, Vikram, Aruna Irani, Raza Murad, Madan Puri, Sulochana, Shakti Kapoor, Paintal, Jagdeep, Roopesh Kumar, Shobhni Singh, JaiShree T, Indrani Mukherjee, Neeta Metha, Anwar Hussan, Sheetal, Aarti, Maruti, Mac Mohan, Rakesh Roshan, Neeta Mehta etc in it.

“Do Bhai” is a title that was quite frequent in olden days. Movies with this title were made in 1947, 1961 and 1969. Songs from all the three movies have been discussed in the past. The movie of 1947 is already a YIPPEED movie in the blog.

Hullo to all at Atuldom
The rains always send me down memory lane. Whether it is the June to September cycle of the Indian monsoon or the unexpected rains that happen in the connection with the low pressures in the Bay Of Bengal sometime during October – November. Now going back to my school days, I remember that it is all geographical phenomena that brings rain in oct- Nov. but the June rains have more memories attached to them than the winter rains. Our schools used to reopen post summer vacations in June. And the rainy season; as we in Mumbai knew it; would promptly arrive in the second week of June with heavy downpours, water logging and forced closure of schools giving us additional holidays. (Yes; that was common even thirty years ago as it is today when all and sundry cry foul about the bad drainages.)

“Naagin”(1976) was released with some great pre release publicity. It was described as a big multistarrer movie, if I recall correctly. Personally I was rather underwhelmed by such publicity. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Vinod Mehra, Kabir Bedi, Anil Dhawan, Sanjay Khan, Rekha, Reena Roy, Yogita Bali, Prema Narayan, Neelam Mehra, Heena Kausar, Aruna Irani,Jeetendra, Mumtaz, Premnath, Ranjeet, Roopesh Kumar, Komilla Wirk, Jagdeep, Gulshan Arora, Sulochana, Aarti, Anita Guha, Maruti, Tuntun, Satish Arora, Rajan Sethi, Master Bittu etc in it. To my mind, no movie of those days could be described as a multistatter if it did not have at least two actors out of Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra, and none of them were there in this movie.

Today (13 october 2015) is the death anniversary of Kishore Kumar (4 august 1929- 13 october 1987). Kishore Kumar wanted to be a playback singer, but he found himself getting signed up as an actor. Though he acted in lots of movies and made his mark in that role as well, his heart was in singing. But he could only sing for himself and Dev Anand.

Today (11 october 2015) is the 73rd birth anniversary of Amitabh Bachchan (11 october 1942). From his date of birth, it can be seen that he was born a few months after the Quit India movement. Inspired by that movement, he was initially named “Inquibaab”. He was later renamed Amitabh on the suggestion of Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant who was a close friend of Amitabh’s father, poet Hariwanshrai Bachchan.

Today, the 4th of August, is a day we celebrate as the birth anniversary of one of Hindi film industry’s undoubted geniuses, Kishore Kumar.
The term “genius” tends to get thrown around rather loosely and frequently nowadays, much like terms like “legend” and “great”. This is all the more reason why I am rather cautious when I use it and certainly don’t throw it around.
Having said that, I have absolutely no hesitation in using it for Kishore Kumar (or Kishoreda as he is fondly referred to by his friends and fans). Kishore da was one of those rare individuals who tried his hand at many dimensions of the industry – and left a mark with most of them. In a sense, he can be called a true harfan maula of the industry.

Dushman (1971) was a movie starring the hit Jodi of the 70s viz. Rajesh Khanna- Mumtaz. It was the story of a convict who is given a punishment with a difference. His truck runs over a villager who is the only earning member of the family. The poor victim is responsible for his old parents, unmarried sister and his own family –wife and two kids. Now the judge gives the truck driver (Rajesh Khanna) a punishment to look after the family, their field etc. in the village he comes across a girl who shows bioscope shows to the children in and around the village. Today (18 july 2015) is the third death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna ( 29 december 1942- 18 july 2012). People who only read about his superstardom in article and who did not live through that era will not be able to understand what that meant. The entire India was head over heels in love with Rajesh Khanna from late 1960s to early 1970s. Like all good things, it was too good to last forever, though. Rajesh Khanna was not able to handle his superstardom and he began to alienate those who had helped him reach the top. The same people who helped him reach the top began to desert him in favour of the next superstar in the making, viz Amitabh Bachchan, who was better equipped to handle his superstardom.
