Phoolon Ki Sej of 1964 was produced by husband wife team, P Adinarayana Rao and Anjali Devi, under the banner of ‘Anjali Pictures’. The star cast included Vyjayanthimala, Ashok Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Gopi Krishna, Nirupa Roy, Lalita Pawar, Mehmood, Anjali Devi, Shubha Khote, Mukri, Kanhaiyalal etc. The story was based on a Hindi writer Gulshan Nanda’s novel ‘Andhera Chirag’ and the film was directed by Inder Raj Anand. Adinarayana Rao composed the music to the lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri.

The first bhajan from film ‘ Pawanputra Hanuman’-57 was posted on 24th may. Today we will enjoy yet another melodious bhajan from this film, this time sung by the great Manna Dey. In hindi films, bhajans sung by Mohd.Rafi, Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey were very popular. Not that other singers did not sing any bhajan- even G.M.Durrani has sung a bhajan with few Sanskrit lines in the beginning, for the film Veer Arjun-52. If possible, I wish to post that bhajan also here, in future sometime.

Till the 1970s, people in India typically were far less cynical that what they are today. Youngsters typically got to read inspirational books, which meant reading the biographies of great men and also mythological tales viz “Ramayana”, “Mahabharat” etc. In typical Indian households, one could find framed photos/ calenders depicting Gods as well as Great people/ National leaders. I have seen pictures of Lord Ram/ Krishna/ Shiv as well as pictures of Mahatma Gandhi/ Jawaharlal Nehru/ Dr Rajendra Prasad/ Dr S Radhakrishnan/ Subhash Chandra Bose in almost all typical households.

When the going gets completely traditional and classical, then the music directors always turn to that voice, which simply never ceases to amaze with its range and its control over the notes and the ragas. It is the voice of Manna Dey, the last of the old school classical singers, with a firm grounding in the traditional art form of music of the sub continent. The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Premnath, Mehmood, Ashok Kumar, Sujit Kumar, Asrani, Aruna Irani, Nirupa Roy, Madan Puri, Kumari Naaz, Piloo.J.Wadia, Dulari, Ram Mohan, Chaman Puri, Junior Mehmood, Kamal deep, Sadhu Singh, Kuljeet, James Bond, Rirkoo, Kamal, C.L.Shah etc. Then this movie also had Helen, Chitra, Gulshan Bawra, Tuntun and Birbal in guest appearances.

“Amaanat” (1975) was produced and directed by Shatrujit Paul. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Sadhana, Balraj Sahni, Mehmood, Achala Sachdev, Shashikala, Keshto Mukherji etc in it. This movie began in 1960s and its songs got released much before the movie. The movie itself had a very delayed release. It finally got its censor certificate on 31 december 1975 and thus qualified as a movie of 1975!

Dil Ki Raahein (1973) was produced by Majjeda Movies and directed by B R Ishara. The star cast included Rakesh Pandey, Rehana Sultan, Sulochana, Johny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Amrit Pal etc. Naqsh Llayalpuri provided the lyrics and the music was by Madan Mohan. The music of this film did not impress the masses and it was one of the least popular music amongst Madan Mohan’s films. However, one Lata’s song ‘Rasm-e-Ulfat Ko Nibhaayen’ became a collector’s item amongst Madan Mohan’s fans.

“Gajre” (1948) was an Allied Arts Production movie. It was directed by R D Mathur. The movie had Motilal, Suraiya, Agha, Nihal, Sangeeta, Geeta Nizami, Sankatha Prasad, Murad etc in it.
