Remembering Mohammed Rafi Sahab on his 95th birth anniversary :

Hullo Atuldom

Today’s post is for a song from the 1981 release “Zamaane ko Dikhaana Hai” which was produced and directed by Nasir Hussain. It marked the debut of Padmini Kolhapure as an adult; prior to this she had acted as a child star in numerous movies. The music department was handled by Majrooh Sultanpuri and R D Burman. The songs were play-backed by Asha Bhonsle, Shailendra Singh, Mohd. Rafi and Pancham. Nasir Hussain took a few scenes from his “Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hain” – song on train top; runaway girl from “Caravan” and a song & dance competition inspired from “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin”. Additionally, there are multiple songs in a scene as in “Yaadon Ki Baraat” and “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin”.

Hullo Atuldom

We are into the last month of 2019. There are a lot of messages being forwarded on WhatsApp and other social media platforms urging the reader to enjoy the last TEEN year in a long time to come, after this the new millennium will be on the threshold of adulthood (India has 21 as the official age at which a person is considered an adult).

“Insaaf Ka Taraazu”(1980) was produced and directed by B R Chopra for B R Films, Bombay. This movie was inspired from an American movie called “Lipstick” (1976). The movie was a rape and revenge movie. Many people who thronged to watch “Insaaf Ka Taraazu”(1980) were attracted to the movie hall because of this fact.

The movie had Zeenat Aman, Raj Babbar (new discovery), Deepak Parashar (new discovery), Padmini Kolhapure, Shreeram Lagoo, Simi Garewal, Iftekhar, Jagdish Raj, Vijay Sharma, Prem Sagar, Sunil Dhawan, Om Shivpuri, Sujit Kumar, Yunus Parvez, Sudha Shivpuri etc in it, with Hiralal in a guest appearance and Dharmendra in a special appearance.

Happy November to Atuldom

Start of the winters. Bangalore has suddenly turned colder post Navaratri and gearing up for the next most important festival in India – Deepawali.

‘Saajan Bina Suhaagan’ – released in 1978 – was produced and directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. The songs were written by Indeevar and music was by Usha Khanna. When I had heard the songs of this movie I had imagined Usha Khanna to be a rather young person. It was much later I became enlightened that she was also the music director for another set of songs which I love to hear – songs from ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ (1959). But that is not the purpose of this post.

The small girl in the song with this post celebrates her 52nd birthday today—unbelievable she is so young. The birthday list on our blog says she is 1965 born, also the Filmfare awards list page says she was all of 15 when in 1980 she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her depiction of a rape victim (in ‘Insaaf Ka Taraazu’). She seems to have been around forever. I just do not want to use the phrase ‘past her prime.’ Come to think of it she is younger to the Khans who are ruling the industry these days.

No other month begins with a day that is named after itself.  It is only the month of May that starts with a day that is called May Day.  Historically, this specific day has a long history of cultural and social significance.  A history that goes back to pre-Christ era.  The Romans used to celebrate this day as a spring festival.  The festival was called Floralia, in the honor of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.  Further north, in Germany, this day was celebrated as Walburgis Night.  Coinciding with the arrival of summer weather in the European continent, this day was also celebrated as the first day of summer in some regions.  Community fairs were held, with the traditional dancing around the Maypole, and the beauty contest to select and crown the ‘Queen of May’.  People used to distribute anonymous gifts, called May Baskets, in their neighborhoods.
