Today (27 june 2015) is the birth anniversary of R D Burman (27 june 1939-4 january 1994). Today also happens to be a weekend, viz a day when I am theoretically free. So I have resolved to try and post as many R D Burman compositions today as I can. I have a few lyrics and writeup contributions from our contributors and I also expect some more special contribution(s) as the day progresses.

‘Bandhe Haath-1973’ is a movie that I had watched in a ‘touring talkies’ in a ‘village fair’, 10/12 kms away from the colony-place where we were living at that time in 1974-75.

Since then, two things related with this movie have become embedded in my mind- one – the title song of the film ‘dekho ye mere bandhe haath’ sung by Kishore Kumar, and second is the name and face of O.P.Ralhan.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

What is the significance of 27th June in the life of Hindi film music lovers? No need to wreck your brains. It is R D Burman’s 76th birthday. Here is a song that should have been on our blog a long time ago. I mean our blog will be 7 years old in less than a month and this song is yet to be posted OMG!!!

June 6th is Sunil Dutt’s birth anniversary. He was born in 1929, so we celebrate his 86th birthday. His debut film was Railway Platform (1955). The role of the idealist, who wants to change the society, would follow him for most part of the 50s. In 1963 he donned the role of a dacoit Thakur Jarnail Singh, which was quite unusual for the times. In fact, it was sort of an extension of his role in Mother India (1957). Dacoit roles would haunt him for the rest of his career. He did meaningful films, particularly with Chopra brothers in the 60s. His magnum opus Reshma aur Shera (1972) though left him in financial doldrums, which sent him on a film-signing spree throughout the 70s. At first it was to pay back his debts and later for the cancer treatment of his wife. He took leave of his career as a leading man after launching his son in Rocky (1981) with the film Dard Ka Rishta (1982).

With this song the film Dhongee (1976) makes its debut on this blog. I know only this song from this film and remember it from my childhood days, when it used to be played on the radio, on Vividh Bharati to be precise. The YT uploader has erroneously mentioned this movie as a release of 1979.

After celebrating R. D. Burman’s 500th song on the blog with the grand medley of English songs from Bombay to Goa (1972), we are coming to the last song from this movie to be covered on this blog.

The name of the movie suggests that this is a road movie. As usual a road movie needs to have a main character, who undergoes a transformation and realizes his/her past mistakes and comes back to the straight and narrow. The main character of this plot is Mala (Aruna Irani). She is on the run after having witnessed a murder. She boards a bus, which goes from Bombay to Goa.

Whenever this blog reaches a milestone of sorts, we , readers and contributors of this blog, feel a sense of tremendous elation.

It doesn’t matter whether it is a blog post count, or an artist post count. The milestone has been reached, song post by song post. And that means, the audio/video of the song, its full lyrics, its various tags – and a write-up. All of this constitutes ONE song post on this blog. And all of us recognize how fulfilling it is, when we have all these components in place.

And that is why, it is the JOURNEY that we celebrate, as much as the milestone itself. To borrow from a famous song of yesteryear, “raah bani khud manzil…”. 🙂

Today, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we have an opportunity to celebrate yet another milestone on this blog. This one relates to an artist who not only revolutionized Hindi film music, he not only won millions of hearts with his compositions during his time, but seems to have only gained in popularity since his death over 20 years ago.

No other month begins with a day that is named after itself.  It is only the month of May that starts with a day that is called May Day.  Historically, this specific day has a long history of cultural and social significance.  A history that goes back to pre-Christ era.  The Romans used to celebrate this day as a spring festival.  The festival was called Floralia, in the honor of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.  Further north, in Germany, this day was celebrated as Walburgis Night.  Coinciding with the arrival of summer weather in the European continent, this day was also celebrated as the first day of summer in some regions.  Community fairs were held, with the traditional dancing around the Maypole, and the beauty contest to select and crown the ‘Queen of May’.  People used to distribute anonymous gifts, called May Baskets, in their neighborhoods.

Hullo to all at Atuldom
So the world (Atuldom I Mean 😉 ) has changed in the period when I was away in Mumbai. There has been a change on many fronts.

Of late I have discussed quite a few “stage performace” songs of Hindi movies. These movies typically have the lead actress of the movie performing a dance in an auditorium which is invariably sold out. Secondly, the hero of the movie is invariably among the audience. He in fact is in the front row of the audience. To this day I have not been able to find out how the hero manages to get tickts/pass for the front row of such performance even though he is does not play a politician/ administrator/ VIP who normally get to occupy front row on such occasions. I have in fact seen Amitabh Bachchan getting a front row seat for Nirupa Roy and Mukri getting front row seats for himself and his six burqa clad daughters in a song of “Amar Akbar Anthoni”. No, neither Amitabh Bachchan not Mukri are top administrators/ politicians of the town, but they still occupy the front row. 🙂 VIP culture is conspicuous by its absence in such picturisations. 🙂
