Film MAASHUKAA(1953) had 9 songs, 8 of which were sung by Mukesh and Suraiyya and the remaining song “ye sama hum tum jawaan” by Kishore Kumar and Meena Kapoor. The song was written by Shailendra and composed by Roshan. I had heard this song on Radio FM Gold about 3 years back but located the audio clip of this song on YT few months back. The film was produced by Mukesh with himself and Suraiyya as the lead pair. Other cast included Agha, Kuldup Kaur, Durga Khote and Amirbai Karnataki. Four songs from this film have already been discussed in this blog.

There are some Hindi film songs, especially of early 50s, which have been in my memory bank since childhood and those includes the songs from “Hum Log” (1951). Two songs of this film viz. Chali jaa chali jaa chali jaa and Chhun chhun chhun baaje paayal (Ham Log) were very popular when the film was released. 16th november 1966 was the day when Roshan, then at the peak of his career expired all of a sudden. That happened exactly 45 years ago and lots of water has flown under the bridge since. His two sons managed to have reasonable careers in Hindi movies, with one of his songs following in his steps as a music director. and his grandson, who was born several years after his death became a superstar of Hindi movies. Today many people of the younger generation remember Roshan as the grandfather of Hrithik Roshan. As far as people of my generation as well as older generation is concerned, Hrithik Roshan is the grand son of Roshan and not vice versa. The fact that the first name of Roshan Lal Nagrath should be adopted as the surname by his sons and grandsons shows what a huge star Roshan was. His name sold, and it sells today, and it will sell long after Hrithik Roshan has retired.
