Today, November 26, 2020 is the 31st Remembrance Day of Chand Usmani (03/01/1933 – 26/11/1989). She excelled in the roles of a suffering woman – as a wife, a sister and later as a mother. Though she was a fan of Hindi films in her teens, she did not think about an acting career in Hindi films. Her first preference was to complete her higher education in keeping with her family tradition. But her fate was written to be an actress.

‘Zindagi Aur Hum’ (1962) was produced by Rashid Parwez and was directed by Pandit Anandkumar. The star cast included Nalini Jaywant, Chand Usmani, Naina, Dinesh, David, Leela Mishra, S Nazir, Mukri, Amar, Jagdish Kanwal, Chandabai, Anwaribai etc. The story was written by Pandit Shivkumar who was the elder brother of Pandit Anandkumar. Pandit Shivkumar also wrote lyrics for 5 of the 6 songs. It was a last film for Pandit Anandkumar as a director though he continued to write screen-play and dialogues for few more subsequent films. It was also the last film for Pandit Shivkumar if I go by the tribute given to him in the credit title of the film.

Today’s song is from the film Baraati-54. This is a comedy song sung by Chitalkar and the MD is Roshan. The director was J.K.Nanda and the cast was Chand Usmani, Peace Kanwal,Agha, Omprakash, Shyam Kumar, Leela Mishra, Johnny Walker, Rajan Haksar, Kathana and many others.

The director J.K. Nanda aka Jai Kishen Nanda was born in 1904, in Bham, Punjab. He was a director, story writer and screenwriter. In spite of all these qualities and having got good films to direct, Nanda could not have a crowded career and directed only 12 films in his career. He wrote screenplay and story of films like Jailor-1938, Singaar-49, Baraat-54 and Mirza Ghalib-54. Films of his direction were Pavitra Ganga-32, Inteqaam-33, Bahen ka Pyar-35, Kudmai-41, Ishara-43, Jhumke-46, Parwana-47, Singaar-49, Chamkee-52, Baraati-54, Dhake ki Malmal-56 and Chaalaak-66.

Mohammed Rafi: The incomparable (II) – Song No. 18
——————————————————
30/08/2020 – Birth anniversary of Shailendra

As children’s songs go, there is a healthy dose available of such songs in hindi films especially in the 50’s and 60’s. Or rather, I should say a healthy dose of children’s songs too along with the other types of songs be it religious songs, happy go lucky masti songs, romantic songs, sad songs, club/party songs, dance/folk/stage songs, road-side tamasha songs, comic songs and the philosophical/theme songs. Not to forget the lori/lullaby songs. Good quality songs were many and all the songs were made with painstaking care. So there is nothing like finding unheard songs. They may not remain in memory some months after the actual post is done, because the memory I find is a very fickle thing. It retains the information fed to it years ago, but is rather quick to do away with recently found and heard things. This is no fault of the songs concerned.
