I was not aware of the fact that “Fakeera” (1976) was made by the same team that made “Chor Machaaye Chor” (1974). I always regarded “Chor Machaaye Shor” (1974) as an A grade movie and “Fakeera” (1976) as a B grade one. The fact that Mumtaz was the leading lady in “CMS” and a Shababa Azmi, then known only for her arts movie roles had much to do with my opinions about the two movies.

Daughter of Kaifi Azmi and Shaukat Azmi, Shabana Azmi made her debut in arts movies in early 1970s. after a few years, she made it to the mainstream movies. “Masoom” (1982) was inspired from “Man, Woman and Child written” by Erich Segal. And it must be said that the tale was very well adapted by Gulzar who wrote the screenplay and directed with great sensitivity and understanding by Shekhar Kapoor. There were few people in the audience who remained unmoved by the plight of eight year old Rahul (played by Jugal Hansraj), a result of one night affair between an unwed Bhawna (played by Supriya Pathak) and a happily married DK (Naseeruddin Shah) at Nainital at a time when DK’s wife Indu (Shabana Azmi) is expecting their first child. DK goes back home and has a happy family life with two daughters Pinky (Urmila Matondkar) and Minni (Aradhana).

The news came in yesterday that the renowned Ghazal Singer Jagjit Singh was no more. And I was surprised to know that he was 70 years of age when he died. And then I realised that I had first heard his ghazals in 1980s, which happens to be three decades ago. So he was indeed that old.
