I have mentioned this fact about Hindi movie songs that most of them are about human feelings viz love, sadness, happiness and not about commerce/business. In fact there are very few songs that are about selling some products. I have discussed a few songs where chanajor or similar stuff is being sold. In one such write up, readers came up with the list of a few other songs where some item was being sold.

When the name of Ghulam Mohammed is mentioned, the mind conjures up the classical and semi classical sounds and rhythms, foremost from Pakeezaah and then from many other movies like Shamaa, Mirza Ghalib, Laila Majnu, Dil e Nadaan, Shaayar, and other such movies. And so it is a surprise to come across lighter songs and foot tapping numbers that have been composed under his baton. On first hearing, if the details are not known, one can easily attribute these songs to OP Nayyar or Shankar-Jaikishan, Chitragupt etc.

“Rail Ka Dibba” (1953) is one of the earliest movie of Shammi Kapoor. In this movie he is paired opposite Madhubala. By that time, Madhubala had already carved a niche for herself whereas Shammi Kapoor had yet to discover his niche.

“Pugree” (1948) is a movie that had Amar, Wasti, Kamini Kaushal, Dikshit,Shashikala, Gope, Pratima Devi, Ram Avtaar etc in it.
This movie had some nice songs in it which were sung by Mukesh, Sitara Kanpuri and Shamshad Begam. I have so far discussed three songs from this movie.

These are are days of consumerism where people have mind boggling variety of materials to choose from. It is difficult to imagine today that Indian shops till 1970s wore spartan looks and they hardly had anything to offer. People got “phoren” goods from abroad and flaunted them proudly. And smuggling (bringing items without paying the exorbitant taxes) was a flourishing business.
