No better words to express the exuberance and the playfulness of a liberated spirit. A poet’s dream and life’s illustration in reality, all anxieties and caution thrown to the winds and the desires to live the life the way it should be. These words from the pen of Shailendra, and numerous other such gems, of all moods and flavors, embellish the Hindi film screen for 160+ films across two decades. The song “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan” and the movie “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan” are different. A song thus titled first appeared in an Ashok Kumar movie called “Bandhan”(1938). The movie “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan” appeared in 1944. This movie too starred Ashok Kumar. So this phrase “Chal Chal Re naujawaan” whether as a song or as a movie title became inextricably associated with Ashok Kumar.

The melodious strains of ‘Chalo Dildaar Chalo, Chaand Ke Paar Chalo’, composed more than 4 decades ago, sound and feel like a fresh breeze of air, every time one listens to it. The magnum opus of the famously talented Ghulam Mohammed, a string of his best creations – ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi Mil Gayaa Thhaa’, ‘Inhi Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mera’, ‘Mausam Hai Aashiqaana’ and more – establish the definition of what Ghulam Mohammed’s body of musical creation is. A pity that this success came somewhat late in the day – a release that marked a watershed in the history of Hindi film music was to happen about three years after the demise of its creator.
