ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 17
———————————————————————

Some achievements boggle your mind. A few years ago it was 10k song and now its 10 years of this blog. Maybe I should say it bloggles my mind! Terrible puns aside, I apologize for this delayed write up. Some incidents over the last weekend, caused me to tragically lose my phone, and after a remote data erase, miraculously find it again. It felt like a Hindi film honestly, one I would have titled ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ if there hadn’t already been one by that name.

Today’s song is from a comparatively new film ‘Lagaan’ (2001). The song, written by Javed Akhtar and composed by AR Rahman, is sung by 5 singers, viz. Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh and Udit Narayan. Why do I feel some readers are smiling after reading my above sentence calling ‘Lagaan’ as a new film ? As compared to what my forte has been so far (old films from 1930s to 1970), ‘Lagaan’ IS a comparatively new film. . . at least for me !

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Year- 1999. Months- June/ July. Region- Snow-clad Himalayas. Kashmir to be more precise. Kargil- Dras sector to be even more exact. Aim- to control the Siachen Glacier by establishing military outposts on the surrounding mountains ridges. This has often resulted in military skirmishes in the 1980s and tensions only escalated in the 1990s. In an attempt to defuse the situation, both countries signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999, promising to provide a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict.

People talk about the rich voice quality that Amitabh Bachchan has – the baritone etc. But has it occurred to anyone that there are and were and will be other actors who have or had similar voice? One such voice was that of Mogambo. There are tales that tell how the makers of “Mr. India” went from Danny to Amjad Khan to any other known faces of that era to play the character of Mogambo. Each one had his own reason for not taking up that character and eventually Amrish Puri ended up being The Mogambo and now it is impossible to even imagine any other person as Mogambo. I am unable to distinguish the man from the character and part of the power in the role was the voice of the actor.

The song that is appropriate for today as far as western India is concerned is Kai Po che from “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”. There will be lot of kites littering the skies starting today. But the main attraction will be in Gujarat where there are kite flying competitions etc. and sounds of “Kai Po Che” resound from all corners.

Hi to all in Atuldom

Here is a quick quiz. Can anyone tell what is 26th October all about? Well well since this is a post by me obviously the answer to the quiz is birthday. But whose? One of our —ahh is it ok if I call the person a founder follower of the blog? One who has seen this ASAD from day one. Someone whose farmaish was first on the blog. Someone who saw the exclusive farmaish page on the blog first and sent a list of 5 farmaishes. One who was Atulji’s online friend first before physically meeting him. Am I right Atulji?

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 5
—————————————————–

The carrying capacity of this man is amazing. There is an aura about him that continues to draw the audiences. The measure of his success and popularity is pretty much sustained, as his fans continue to return to the cinema/video time after time after time. I believe that the secret behind this sustenance has been his capacity to re-invent himself, and his portrayals.

I must frankly admit that I have kept away from the mainstream cinema, mostly after the seventies faded away, and a new order both in terms of performers, as well as music, came on to the scene.  The time also coincided with the years amounting to almost two and a half decades that I was traveling, and away from India most of the time.  The viewing of current films was random and patchy at the best, and that I never went out of my way to acquire and watch a current film.  Unless it was recommended to me, and that too, by someone whose judgement I would trust.

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 2
—————————————————–

I am sure everyone remembers Dr. Bhaskar Bannerji.  A very young rookie doctor, who is very troubled with the state of health affairs in general.  An introvert and reserved person, living a very sedate life.  The story is ‘Anand’ and the actor behind the Babu Moshai character captured the attention and the imagination of the audiences and critics alike.  He was new, and struggling and still to land a lead role for himself.  That was 1970.

In Hindi movies, the lead actors are supposed to have feelings, whereas others viz villain’s, lesser actors, cabarat dancers etc are shown as people without feelings and emotions. But that is not the case, all human, whether they are ordinary or extraordinary, are emotional creatures.

If there was a national season in India, it would probably be the monsoons. Across the country, the arrivals of rains is awaited and celebrated, not only traditional ways but also in very personal ways. Someone might have their mother making Adrak wali chai (ginger tea) and pakodas for them, while someone else might have a standing date with Bandra Bandstand. We all have some beautiful memories of rain that rerun in our heads when the first rains hit the dry soil wherever we are.
