There are many instances when songs from obscure movies went on to become evergreen. This song from a barely remembered movie called Shagoon (1964) is one such song. During the heyday of Radio in India in 1960s and 1970s, there were many popular radio programmes. There was one Radio programme called “Chayageet” on Vividh Bharati daily at 10 PM. The songs played in this song were typically old songs which I as a young kid regarded as boring. There were certain songs which I associated with this programmes. Typically, songs which were “bhoole bisre” and not so popular with the janta were played in this programme.

I have mentioned in the past that I had a diary in 1970s, in which I noted down the lyrics of the songs that I liked the most. A few of the songs noted at that time have become forgotten, though they are just as good to listen to now as they were then.

As timepass songs go, this must qualify as among the very best timepass songs of all time. The public at that time certainly enjoyed it, as shown by its Binaca geetmala ranking of number 4 in the Binaca geetmala final of 1970.

The topic of the song is an interesting one. Manoj Kumar is a country bumpkin and two girls decide to play matchmakers for him, and show him diferent girls. But Gangaram, our village bumpkin finds himself under severe culture shock on watching the modern girls of 1970, and expresses his disapproval in no uncertain way.

The lyrics are sad and poignant, as well as philosophical. Our near and dear ones have to leave us one day,sooner or later. This is inevitable and we better get reconciled to it. Holding on to them forever is just not feasible. The only thing one can do is to hold on to their memories.

This song talks of the sweet memories that our loved one may leave behind once it is time for her to depart to the other world.
