chali baadlon ke paar

And today, without much ado, she has embarked on the journey across the skies. It was an unexpected stumble today afternoon. Checking emails and messages and comments, I clicked on the comment posted by Nahm ji, and read this sad message. And then there were other follow ups from Sadanand ji and Peevesie’s Mom ji. Unexpected, I say – she has been away from films and media limelight for close to three decades. After retiring from films in the early 1980s, one heard or read so little about her current affairs. So much so that the mind and the memories fixated on to the image that she was three four decades ago. The mind is so sold on that image, that in the absence of any subsequent updates, it kept her within memories always as a beautiful young person. And hence the stumble when suddenly faced with this sad news today.

The chhoti behan of “Chhoti Behan” (1959), the Ruma of ‘Hum Dono’ (1961), the Rita of ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965) – Nanda of real life, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, 25 Mar 2014. The surprise and shock was apparent in the minds of everyone who heard the news, for she did not have any history of poor health, least of all, any cardiac problems.

My earliest remembrance of her is from the flashes stored in the memory from the viewing of the film ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’. Little would I understand then the sensuousness of her performance of “Yeh Samaa, Samaa Hai Ye Pyaar Ka”, but the image of a cute, petite, sharp featured lively leading lady, with one of liveliest smiles that I have seen in my lifetime, became a favorite forever. The memories of my own first decade are punctuated with ‘Pati Patni’ (1966), ‘Abhilasha’ (1968), ‘Ittefaq (1969), ‘The Train’ (1970), and ‘‘Joru Ka Ghulam’ (1972). Alongside, catching up with re runs and morning
shows to take in the likes of ‘Kaala Bazaar’ (1960), ‘Hum Dono’ (1961), ‘Teen Devian’ (1965), ‘Akaashdeep’ (also 1965) and many more.

What she may have lacked in stature, she more than made up in her expressions and histrionics. She started her career as child artist. A
quick scan of Geet Kosh records shows the name Nanda, Baby Nanda, Ms Nanda begins to appear in films as early as the second half of 1940s. Her bio sketches indicate ‘Toofaan Aur Diya’ (1956) as her first significant role, a tale of a child’s heroics in taking on the life’s adversities, by V Shantaram. Capturing attention with her supporting roles, her first major portrayal comes in 1959 in films such as ’Barkha, ‘Chhoti Behan’ and ‘Dhool Ka Phool’. The year was a significant upturn in her career. This year saw her substantial roles in as many as eight films.

The song in this post is from the film ‘Zara Bachke’ from the year 1959 only. With the variety of supporting roles that she was portraying in other films, this film appears to be her first assay as the leading lady, opposite to Suresh. This song could well be her first romantic duet on screen as a leading lady. A wonderful lilting creation, with words written by Asad Bhopali and set to music by Nashaad. The singing voices are those of Lata and Manna Dey. On screen, the song is performed by Nanda and Suresh. Adorned with two ponytails, a very young Nanda appears on screen, capturing attention with her lovely expressions as she performs this song.

An appearance that is the lasting image of this young and naughty lass. Unbelievable to think that she is gone already. RIP Nanda. Remain young
and naughty, forever.

RIP Nanda ji.

sad news. she was a sweet lady I guess. RIP Nandaji.

She had dignity poise, grace, elegance, delicatessen and savoir faire. She was very unlucky in love.
