I was in the midst of writing a short write-up on a song from the film ‘Jawaani Ki Reet’ (1939) produced under the banner of New Theatres. The film was not available to view in DVD/VCD format. Luckily, I could get a short review of the film in February 1940 issue of  ‘Filmindia’ magazine which gave me some indication as to the theme of the story. The story reminded me of the film ‘Kangan’ (1939) produced under the banner of Bombay Talkies, as I had watched the 40-minute snippet of the film on YT a few days back.

Sometimes, things can’t get more rare than this. As we look for rare combination of artists, and especially singers, we come across combinations where two artists have worked together in a song, once or maybe twice in the entire history of Indian cinema. This song today, is one such song. It is a duet, rather I should correct myself, it is a trio of singers. There are two female voices, and one male voice. The male voice is not identified, even in the Geet Kosh listings. The female voices are Shamshad Begum and Hamida Bano. And the year is 1948.

The original HMV of EMI group was renamed RPG, when purchased by the Goenka Group. Later on in 2000, this major music producing company was aptly named as ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’. During earlier years, it used to sponsor great artists to produce many non-film music albums. Later on, under the false pretext of changing music trends, but mainly due to commercial angles, such publications along with classical music albums ware slowly reduced to very near zero.

Missing Films of 1960s – 24

To each his due – that is an adage that basically covers all the destinies, whether right or wrong, whether happy or sad. The struggle to definitively define whether success is destined, or whether it can be achieved through hard work, is a tough task indeed. Logic and arguments work both ways. Believers of destiny even go as far to propound that one will put hard work in life, because that is what the destiny says should be. And sometimes one tends to lean towards that argument – for there are numerous cases we know of people successful without having to put in too much hard work, or having displayed much capabilities. And of course, there are cases, also very numerous, where highly capable people are seen putting in lot of hard work most of their lives, but still, the coveted fruits of success elude them. And so, after witnessing so many such seemingly unfortunate lives, living through such seemingly unfair circumstances, one is eventually resigned to say – to each his due.

‘त’
“तुम्हीं से हुई है शुरू और तुम्हीं पे सनम खत्म होगी कहानी हमारी”

What a gem of a delight this song is, from the 1969 film ‘Mera Dost’. As we continue to delve and search, we continue to come across as yet un-posted songs that are simply out of this world. Such wonders will not cease, I am sure for quite some time yet.

For a soft and lovely and romantic expression, it probably does not get better than this delightful ghazal. The words, the music, and the rendition – all have come together to craft this wonderful expression of bashful love. Love, that wants to say many things, but remains un-speaking, when presented with the opportunity. The anxiety and hesitations tie the tongue, and the moments pass by without a word being said. Shakeel Sb has so beautifully painted the words around this emotion. Each couplet is a priceless gem. I am bowled over with how the words are knitted together.

jaane kis raah par jaa rahi theen
un ko dekha to manzil samajh kar
ruk gaya karvaan un ke aage
