Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Shiv Kanya-1954.

The decade of the 1950 was known for 2 things. As we all know, the first thing was that it was the peak of “The Golden Era” of Hindi film music. Secondly, it was also the peak of Mythological and Religious films (124 films in 10 years). So, there was atleast 1 such new film every month continuously for the next 120 months !

When so many Mythological films are made, naturally many stories are repeated in some way or the other. Usually stories from the 18 Puranas, 18 Up-Puranas and 2 Epics- Ramayana and Mahabharat are used for films. Fed up with the usual stories, some filmmakers tried to find unused new stories from the puranas, while some tried to cook up own stories by using the Mythological names and mixing several stories.

Hullo Atuldom

Bindu Nanubhai Desai (known to us as Bindu) turns 85 today. She has been an entertainer since the 1960s. Her father Nanubhai Desai was a film producer who died when she was about 13. And like many others of that period, like (for example) the Mangeshkar sisters in the 1940s, the burden of earning money fell on her shoulders as she was the eldest of seven siblings. She made her debut in 1962 as Mala Sinha’s daughter in ‘Anpadh”. (An interesting trivia is that Bindu’s cousin Aruna Irani played the character of the young Mala Sinha in that film). The very classical music based song ‘jiya le gayo ji mora’ was filmed on her.

Mukesh and his Actors – 10

This will be the last of the duets that Mukesh sang with Suman Kalyanpur. For obvious reasons, I take back readers to my post on their complete collaboration. Here is the memorable post.

Out of the 36 duets they sang, 5 were yet to be covered by that time. One was covered in that post itself. One was a cheeky post taken away by Atul ji, citing reasons why I could not have taken it up. 😊

Thereafter, I covered two duets and this is the last. It is from the film Chori Chori (1973).

Well, this film is not to be confused with the more popular Chori Chori (1956) even though both films were composed by the same composers, Shanker Jaikishan.
