Regular Hindi movie watchers may have certainly watched a few historical/mythological movies involving Kings. In these movies,King and his ministers would assemble in a Raj Darbaar (King’s court) the way today’s Business houses have their General Body Meeting. What is common in all these meetings is that after the meeting, there would be often by an entertainment programme. Today, the location of entertainment may be different from that of the meeting, but that was not the case in historical times. The entertainment programme would take place in the Raj darbaar itself.

“Ratan”(1944), or ‘Rattan” as it is mentioned in old posters, was a turning point in Hindi movie music. Before this movie, the movie music was based on classical music. But the music of this movie broke new grounds and introduced music based on folk music. And the folks (ordinary public) lapped up this music. And soon, every other music director jumped onto the band wagon and Hindi movie music began to enjoy much higher level of popularity among public.

When one thinks on the movie “Modern Girl” (1961), one thinks of the song Ye mausam rangeen samaan. This song is a very popular Mukesh song,and I associate this song with this movie whenever I hear the name of this movie.
