I have been listening to this song for over three decades and all these days I was under the impression that it must be a song sung in a mela by two females. Yesterday I watched the picturisation of this song for the first time. Wow ! What picturisation !

It is a totally forgotten song from a totally forgotten movie called ‘Agra Road” (1957). But when I saw the picturisation, I was so impressed with the lady. Who is this pretty lady ? It is Shakeela, I gather.

Somehow I feel that “Umrao Jaan” was to Rekha what “Paakeza” was to Meena Kumari. Both these movies were of a similar genre, showing a courtesan singing Mujra in a kotha.

This is a duet sung by Lata and Kishore Kumar,two of the biggest names among playback singers. But the same cannot be said about the lyricist and the music director, both of whom were debutants. Maya Govind was the lyricist. She was arguably the first female lyricist in Bollywood. Bhupen Hazarika, known more for his playback singing was the music director of this movie.

I have listened to this song for the first time only now. And this song is from a 1964 movie called Shabnam. The music director is Usha Khanna, but the lyricist is an unknown person for me called Jawed Anwar.
