Mukesh started his filmy career in Hindi film industry as an actor-singer in ‘Nirdosh’ (1941). But it was his song dil jaltaa hai to jalne de in ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) which paved the way for him to become a successful playback singer. Somehow, Mukesh seemed to have been beaten by the acting bug. He acted in films like ‘Aah’ (1953), ‘Maashooqa’ (1953) and in his own production ‘Anuraag’ (1956). He had also produced two films – ‘Malhar’ (1951) which was a success in the box office. However, he did not act in this film. His second film as producer was ‘Anuraag’ (1956) in which he also acted in a lead role and composed music for the film. The film was a flop. With this, his foray into acting as well as music directin in Hindi films came to an end.

These days I am trying to post all the songs of movies that have only a few songs left. The leftover songs are sometimes not very easy to locate. In some cases they may not even be available.

This article is the 9000th song post in the blog.

Yesterday, just like that, I googled ‘nine thousand’. Did not expect to find anything really interesting and useful to write about. After all, it is just another number. But really, I was surprised. Wow, never thought I would find such an interesting information description that would be so appropriate for this huge milestone that we have arrived at today.

It is a well known fact to all those interested in Hindi film music of golden era that Mohammed Rafi regarded G M Durrani as his idol. In the initial period of his singing career starting with his public and private performances, Mohammed Rafi used to imitate the singing style of G M Durrani. In the later 40s, as he started getting assignments for playback singing in Hindi films, somewhere during this period, he developed his own style of singing. Perhaps to some extent, credit should go to the music directors like Naushad, Husnlal-Bhagatram and Shyam Sundar who groomed him suitably in the initial stage of his playback singing. Later, with the popularity of his songs in ‘Baiju Bawra’ (1952), he reached the stage of ‘take off into a sustained growth’ in his playback singing carrier. The rest is history.

And so wrote the scribe
Milte Hi Nazar Tum Se
Hum Ho Gaye Deewaane

A dazzling flash of lightning, and a sudden pause. As the heartbeats rapidly quicken, and the vocal chords freeze for a while. The expressions become immobile, and the activity of thoughts quickly peters down to nothing. The sensations subside, and the world around seems as if to have disappeared. Yes, sometimes it happens so, maybe once in a lifetime (and maybe more, for a fortunate few ;).

It is said that Prabaht Films’ ‘Amrit Manthan’ (1934) has the distinction of having songs in ghazal format for the first time. I found that there were 3 songs in this film in ghazal format written by Veer Mohammed Puri. I had never heard of the name of this lyricist (or poet). So the curiosity led me to make a search for his name in websites. Unfortunately, I could not get much information about the lyricist except a hint that he was a poet which I guessed from a ghazal ‘kamsini mein dil pe gham ka bhaar kyon’ from the same film that he had used ‘Veer’ as his takhallus (alias) in the maqta (last she’r) of the ghazal.

This article is the 8900th song post in the blog.

Two years have passed. Well, almost, just about two weeks short. It was another cool night of November that I was busy typing the write up for the 5000th song on this blog. There was much exhilaration and excitement that the 5000th milestone was reached. There were some very cautious and guarded comments, pointing towards the 10,000th song. But at that time, although the 5000th was already capped, the 10,000th still seemed daunting and unthinkable. That was two years ago.
