Many online sources of information indicate that Khaiyyaam made his debut in 1953 with the film ‘Footpath’. This information is erroneous. Zahur Khan, better known as Khaiyyaam, has actually been active as a music director since 1947/48. During the years from 1947 to 1953, he was using a different pseudonym. In this period, he composed music under the name of ‘Sharma ji’. He once shared in an interview, the reason for why he used the name ‘Sharma ji’. His strong interest was music and he moved to Bombay to make a career in films. The years of 1946-47 were very intense with the issues of independence and also the partition of India. A deep divide had occurred between the communities, and a large contingent of film wallahs opted to move to Pakistan.

Today (3 july) is the death anniversary of Raj Kumar. Raj Kumar made his debut as an actor in 1950s and his most productive decade as an actor was the decade of 1960s. There are actors who are remembered for songs picturised on him, but Raj Kumar is often remembered for some of the immortal dialogues picturised on her. For instance, the dialogue of “Waqt” (1975)- “ye bacchon ke khelne ki cheez nahin hai Chunar seth…”, and the “Paakeeja” (1971) dialogue’ “Aape paaon dekhe…”.

The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz, Sanjeev Kumar, Lolita Chatterjee, Rehman, Ranjeet, Asrani, Jayashree.T., Keshto Mukherjee, Dina Pathak, A.K.Hangal, Junior Mehmood, V.Gopal, Ruby Myers(aka senior Sulochana), Ratna, Master Chickoo, Murad, Sunder, Brahm Bhardwaj, Satyen Kappu etc in it.

“Alibaba”(1940) must be one of the earliest (if not the earliest) Hindi movie based on the well known Arabian nights tale of Alibaba and the forty thieves. This movie had Surendranath, Wahidanbai, Sadra Akhtar, Ghulam Mohammad etc in it. It was produced by Sagar and directed by Mehboob.

Though “Hamaari Yaad Aayegi” (1961) is today mainly remembered for its iconic title song sung by Mubarak Begam, the other songs from this movie are arguably in the same league, even if they became oivershadowed by the Mubarak Begam song.
