I was under the impression that lullabies first made their appearance in Hindi movies in 1950s, and that these lullabies have been sung by singers of the golden era (1949-1980). But I just came across a lovely lullaby from the pre golden era.

“Majhdhaar” (1947) is a movie which I know nothing about. Whatever I know about this movie is from what is mentioned in the YT entry of this song. This movie was a Minerva Production and it was directed by Sohrab Modi. Star cast consisted of Surendra, Khursheed, Sadiq Ali, E Tarapore, Baby Tabassum, Rafiq Ghaznavi, Surekha etc.

“Duhaai” (1943) is an extremely obscure movie by now. Little information is available about this movie now. From the little that I have been able to dig about this movie (from imdb), it was directed by V M Vyas. Some of the actors of this movie were Ansari, Shanta Apte, Noorjahaan,Butt Kasar, M Kumar etc.

“Bilwamangal” (1954), a Minar Movies production was directed by D N Madhok. C H Atma played the title role in this movie and Suraiyya played his love angle. Nirupa Roy, Asha Mathus, Ulhas etc were the other actors to figure in this movie.

“Vidyapati” (1937) is one of the earliest Hindi talkies and it is one that was a landmark movie of its time. It was produced by Calcutta’s New Theatre. This movie starred Pahadi Sanyal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Kanan Devi, K C Dey, K N Singh, Kidar Sharma, Nemo, Chhaaya Devi, Leela Desai etc.

“Jagbeeti” (1946) is by now an extremely obscure movie. It was produced by Din pictures and it was directed by M Sadiq. The starcast of the movie, as mentioned in YT is Sadiq Ali, Auraiya, Shakir, Sulochana Chatterji, Abbas, Himalyawala.

In 1970s, kids of my age (and for that matter much of the Indian population) who were used to movie songs of the kind popular in 1970s, found the singing style of old songs quite amusing. And Saigal’s singing style was the source of big mirth among people. There were people who would sing in Saigal style for the purpose of amusing themselves and others. Songs like “jab dil hi toot gaya” were “popular” for this purpose.
