I became aware of the movie “Zindagi” (1940) only just recently, but I was familiar with a couple of songs from this movie for some four decades. I had been listening to these songs at the srtoke of 8 AM on radio many a times in 1970s.

During late 1960s and much of 1970s, when I was growing up as a kid, I scoffed at the songs that were played on radio Ceylon between 7-30 to 8 AM, which was the time for the programme called “Puraani filmon ke geet”. And the programme culminated at the stroke of 8 with a song by K L Saigal.

Ashok Kumar has been the doyen of the male actors of the Hindi film world, with a career that started in the 1930s and lasted to the early 2000s.
