Most nice songs usually become popular. Or is it really so ? There is much legwork involved before the songs of a movie can become popular. The movie, as well as its songs need to arouse the curiosity of public before their release. For that the movie and its songs need to be marketed. In case the movie has saleable stars and the movie is made by a well known production house with deep pockets, then the songs of that movie stand a good chance of being heard.

“Afsaanaa” (1951) is a movie that had Ashok Kumar and Veena in lead roles.It also had Pran,Kuldeep Kaur,Jeewan, Cuckoo etc in it. This movie was a musical blockbuster and I have discussed as many as seven songs from this movie in the past.

“Lala Rukh”(1958) is a movie that had Shyama, Talat Mehmood, Vikram Kapoor, Radhika, Lotan, Jagdish Kamal, Tuntun, Ranibala etc in it. Yes, those were the day when Talat Mehmood, like Mukesh, was trying to become an actor-singer. Both of them suffered financially as well as in their singing careers, before they finally reconciled themselves to opt for just singing careers.

“Saaranga” (1960) is a mythological movie with lovely songs in it. Listening to the songs of this movie on a peaceful evening is a wonderful experience. That is how I had first heard the title song of this movie (Saarangaa teri yaad mein(Saarangaa)(1960)) in 1970s in Vividh Bharati in a summer evening.

Aaja rasiyaa man basiyaa

When it comes to titles for Hindi movies, most of these titles are one to three words long and then tend to have certain common Hindi/Urdu words in them. Combination of an adjective like Badi/Chhoti plus a noun for a woman itself may yield half a dozen or more titles. Then using words like Afsaanaa/fasaanaa/Kahaani either alone or in combination of a few other words leads to many titles. The possibilities are in fact endless.

“Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiyaa” (1966) had a story line that could send movie watchers a headache with its storyline. This movie, despite a good cast- Nutan, Dharmedra, Rehman etc, had a storyline that few people could digest, and few people did.
