This song is indeed the reason why we remember this movie called “Prem Nagar” to this date. The movie, which turned out to be a box office disaster despite boasting of the biggest names of the industry viz Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini, had a story line that failed to appeal to the movie goers.

This song is a festival song, a “holi” song to be precise. Everyone is seen with some gulaal applied on their faces, and Rajesh Khanna is seated with Asrani. Rekha, with gulaal applied on her cheeks as well, comes with a lota full of bhang and pours Asrani some of it. Rajesh Khanna also proffers his glass forward. Rekha, not interested in pouring him the intoxicant, thrusts the lota on Rajesh Khanna’s hands and departs on a huff, only to be stopped on her tracks when a song begins.

This particular song is one that is a much liked song, but I doubt if too many people would be able to explain why they like this song. True, Rafi’s voice is as divine as ever, and Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music is always great, but how many of them are able to understand the lyrics ? Personally, I have little idea what the lyrics mean.

Meena Kumari is typecast in many people’s mind as a tragedy queen, but there were days when she used to play happy bubbly roles. For instance, I have watched her in “Miss Mary” and how cute and pretty she looks in that movie playing a normal female possessing a sense of humour. How dearly I would love to see her in similar roles.

Manna Dey was an outsider as far as singing mainstream songs were concerned. Unlike other singers, he was reduced to singing unusual songs viz songs for lesser characters in the movie, viz comedian etc. Difficult songs, unlikely to get popular with lay public viz semi classical songs were also given to him to sing. In fact, many of such semi classical songs were included in the movies to provide comic relief.

I thought that they do not make songs like they made in Bollywood in 1970s. I was wrong. Here is a mast party song cum drunk song that transforms into a rain song. This song is of as recent vintage as 2005.
