The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 8
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

An absolute gem.  A duet song from 1938 about which almost no information is available.  Just that the film is ‘Baanke Saanwariya’ and the name of the music director is  Damodar Sharma.  I even checked the actual 78 rpm record of this song, which is available with my friend.  Even the names of the singers is not mentioned.

THE VELVET MAGIC-TALAT DUETS……song No. 5
—————————————————
Surinder Kaur sings with Talat in this duet from film Shadi ki raat-50.

I have observed one thing that the fans of HFM are generally absolute diehards about their favourite singers. Lata, Asha, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Saigal, Talat, Manna Dey, Geeta and Shamshad are usually the favourite singers of music lovers and their fans are simply devoted to them. Out of this list, just remove Saigal and Talat, because they had Unique voices and there was no direct competitors of them as far as their voices were concerned.

aao aao
laal paan ki begum
do ka chaar banaayenga, chaar ka aath banaayengaa

As promised, here is a very unique sales pitch song.  And very entertaining too, very fast paced – as fast paced as the real life protagonists who run these roadside trick business.  Yes, quick gambling – very quick, very dirty.  An innocent participant will always part with his money.

THE VELVET MAGIC-TALAT DUETS….Song No. 4
———————————————
This duet is from film Pagle-50,sung by Talat and Rajkumari.

This duet was a combination of an upcoming Young male singer and a waning middle aged female singer. But there was ONE common thing between them. We all know, Talat had a ‘Tremor'( Kampan) in his voice-which set him apart from all other singers of his times. Few people know that even Rajkumari had a Tremor in her voice-albeit a faint one- which actually made her voice sweet and melodious making her voice different from others.

THE VELVET MAGIC- TALAT DUETS ….song no. 3
———————————————–

Today’s song is from film Meenar-54. It is a duet of Lata and Talat.

BOMBAY has always been an attraction for outsiders. It is a Dream-City for most people coming from other states. Not every one’s dreams are realised, but it does provide opportunities. Then it is your luck and efforts, which will either make you or break you. This is not only about Film line but people from all walks of like look at Bombay this way.It started from the 17th Century when Bombay was just a cluster of undeveloped islands. In the 18th and 19th century Bombay developed into a Metropolitan city, having a majority of people from outside. Bombay Gazette of 1885 says that , out of a total population of 10 lakhs, almost 9 lakhs were outsiders, i.e, Non-Natives. A Minority of Britishers ruled the majority for a long time.

THE VELVET MAGIC- TALAT DUETS….Song No. 2
———————————————–
Today’s song is a duet of Talat and Lata, from the film ‘Meharbani-50’. The film makes a debut on the Blog with this song.

The Music Director of this film was HAFIZ KHAN. Now, this name is a case of “Same Name Confusion” with many people. There were Two composers of the same name, active in the same time period. There was one Hafiz Khan singer, who was given the nick name of Mastana by his senior Meer Sahib. Hafiz Khan Mastana was essentially a singer. He sang in Hindi films from 1938 to 1959 in over 100 films singing about 200 songs, according to one source. He also gave music to 24 Hindi films, from 1940 to 1952. He also acted in 5 films.

The Music Director Hafiz Khan of today’s song, was a trained expert Sarangiya (Sarangi Player) from Lahore. His first film as a composer was Zeenat-1945. The other composers with him here were Meer Sahib and Rafiq Gaznavi. This film’s music became famous because of the First ever All female qawali “Aahen na bhari, shikwe na kiye” in it. Hafiz Khan had also composed 4 melodious songs in this film. He gave music to Zeenat-45, Humjoli-46, Meharbani-50, Lakeeren-54, Mera salaam-57 and his last film Shareef Daku-60.

Basics of Music- Part II (Taal)
————————–
In part I, we introduced the concepts of “octave” and “notes” and mentioned that they are known as “saptak” and “swar” respectively in Hindustani classical music. We used these concepts to discuss “Aaroh” and “Avroh”. Ab aage…

With this song the film Dhongee (1976) makes its debut on this blog. I know only this song from this film and remember it from my childhood days, when it used to be played on the radio, on Vividh Bharati to be precise. The YT uploader has erroneously mentioned this movie as a release of 1979.
