It is perhaps the inability of our times to distinguish between the “good” and the “great”, the “noteworthy” and the “legendary”, the “impressive” and the “brilliant”, that leads us to use the latter of the two adjectives in each case in far greater measure, and for far more modest achievements than would have been approved of by an earlier generation. Or maybe it is just our laziness, or our tendency to exaggerate, that leads us to our use (or abuse) of the English language in this manner.

“Dharti” (1970) was a Chitralaya Production. It was produced and directed by Sridhar. The movie had Rajendra Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Kumkum, Ajit, Balraj Sahni, Kamini Kaushal, Rajendra Nath, Sudesh Kumar, Pahadi Sanyal etc in it.

“Memsaab” (1971) was a Guru Dutt Films combines production. It was produced and directed by Atmaram, Guru Dutt’s ypunger brother. This movie had Vinod Khanna, Yogita Bali, Bindu, Abhi Bhattacharya, Asrani, Meena T , Jayashree T , Asit Sen, Hercules, Jagdish Raj, Mac Mohan, Naval Kumar, Rajen Hakser, Rajan, Shakoor, Tarun Bose, Mridula, Ashoo, Keshto Mukherji etc in it.

I have just found a Rafi-Lata duet, from the film “Naach Ghar”. This is a film released in 1959, with N. Datta as Music Director and Saahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. This movie seems to be full of duets, with as many as four Lata-Rafi duets, one Asha – Rafi and one Geeta Dutt- Rafi.

When we like songs, we tend to gain information about the songs (name of the movie, actors lip syncing it etc) in due course. And then there are songs whose information continue to be nebulous though that does not stop us from enjoying these songs.

“Pyaar Ka Sapna” (1969) was a Modern Pictures presentation. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherji. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Biswajeet, Mala Sinha, Helen, Kundan, Mridula, Johnny Walker, Durga Khote, Naina, Rajen Haksar etc in it.

I was not aware of the fact that “Fakeera” (1976) was made by the same team that made “Chor Machaaye Chor” (1974). I always regarded “Chor Machaaye Shor” (1974) as an A grade movie and “Fakeera” (1976) as a B grade one. The fact that Mumtaz was the leading lady in “CMS” and a Shababa Azmi, then known only for her arts movie roles had much to do with my opinions about the two movies.
