When I saw the lyrics of this song sent to me by nahm, I thought that she had sent this lyrics by mistake. How can this song be not yet posted ? But when I checked up, I found that not only this song, but in fact none of the songs of this movie, namely “Neela Aakash” (1965) have figured in the blog so far. So that makes this song a “How come this song is ot yet posted !” category of song.

There are songs which people may have heard for the last time several decades ago, or perhaps they may have never heard them before. Listening to such songs are like stumbling upon a long lost acquaintance, or like meeting someone whom you should have known much earlier.

Today (19 january) is the date of birth of Kaifi Azmi. To many music lovers of younger generations, he may be a lesser known name, and even to me, he was a “boring” lyricist when I was growing up. Having grown up (hopefully) 🙂 I have come to appreciate Kaifi Azmi better. We have over one hundred Kaifi Azmi songs in this blog and that speaks volumes about the fact that Kaifi Azmi was one of the major contributors in making the Golden era of Hindi movie music what it was, viz a memorable era for music lovers.

Before the advent of television and internet, Radio Ceylon (later Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) and Vividh Bharati were the main sources of listening to Hindi film songs. In respect of old Hindi film songs, it was observed that while Radio Ceylon specialised in broadcasting film songs of 40s and 50s, Vividh Bharati’s broadcast was more pronounced towards the songs of late 50s and 60s. Accordingly, during those days of radio, I had categorised songs into ‘Radio Ceylon’ songs and ‘Vividh Bharati’ songs depending upon where these songs were heard the most. 😀

There are some Hindi film songs, especially of early 50s, which have been in my memory bank since childhood and those includes the songs from “Hum Log” (1951). Two songs of this film viz. Chali jaa chali jaa chali jaa and Chhun chhun chhun baaje paayal (Ham Log) were very popular when the film was released. Those days, these songs were quite often played over loudspeakers in my neighbourhood.

A film with the name ‘Baadshah’ was released in 1954, with music by Shankar Jaikishan. Three songs from this film are already posted on this blog. And then, in 1964, there is another film released by the same name. Produced under the banner of Navkala Niketan, the film is directed by Chandrakant Gaur. The lyrics are from the pen of Anand Bakshi, and the music compositions are by N Dutta. The film is a stunt costume drama with the cast of actors including Dara Singh, Nishi, Kumari Rani, Tiwari, Rajan Haksar, Kehsav Rana, Radheyshyam, Kumud Tripathi, Uma Khosla, Mumtaz Begum, Rafique Sultana, Shiela Devi, Shamina, Kesari etc.

Thanks to Arun ji for prodding the memory cells. Here is another wonderful melody from the film ‘Light House’ (1958). This time around, it is a song of exuberance, executed in a very fast tempo. It is the same team that has given two melancholic gems, “Tang Aa Chuke Hain Kashmakash-e-Zindagi Se Hum” and “Kis Jagah Jaayen Kis Ko Dikhlaayen” – lyrics from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi, music under the stewardship of N Dutta, and the wonderful rendition by Asha Bhosle.
