‘Shabistaan’ (1951) – the film that saw the sensational and tragic end of a very young and handsome star, who had broken into the popular imagination of the cinegoers just two or three years earlier. Called by some as the Eroll Flynn of Hindi cinema, Shyam was all of 31 years old when he died following the injuries sustained in a fall from horseback while shooting for this film. Historians have speculated that the course of Hindi cinema in the 1950s would have been very different, had this accident not happened.

But the memory of Rajesh Khanna will remain with us for a long time. People of my generation were just in the right age bracket to be out and out Rajesh Khanna fans. The fan following that Rajesh Khanna enjoyed during his heydays was unbelievable. The population of India has doubled from the time when Rajesh Khanna was at his peak, but I can say that no subsequent actor has come anywhere close to him in fan following.

A new film on the blog. And another one that tells us that the producers will go after some very strange names as the film title. Hollywood may have come out with films like ‘Telefon’, ‘Cellular’, ‘Phone Booth’ etc. much later. The Hindi film industry already had a film titled ‘Trunk Call’ way back in 1960. And today this film makes a debut on this blog.
